  • 12" Sub - recommendations please

    My system is complete now minus one critical component - a sub

    I need something nice and efficient, as I dont have alot of power to play with.

    Amp: 4x50W RMS - rear channels bridged for sub.
    Car: subaru liberty (legacy) wagon

    I want a single 12" sub.

    I have always liked the JL's but im tired of waiting for the new W1 series to be released. does anyone have any good alternatives to this sub?

    Thanks

    It'll be tough to push much a sub with only 100W RMS... I'd seriously consider another, higher-power amplifier if you want to drive a sub (aim for at least 300w RMS, which most monoblock subs are)...

      that amp will probably bridge to ~200W. what kind of amp is it?

          I have roughly 150W RMS to play with. Please spare the buy a bigger amp arguments. This is what i have to play with. What im after is a recommendation on a good efficient sub.

          Its a response branded amp sold by Jaycar in australia. they are good gear. I have installed about 10 of them in various peoples cars over the years

            Cash has a lot to do with your choice. It also depends on the size of the box you want. (read boot space you want to lose) JL's are good. I myself am looking to buy a kicker solobaric due to a small area to put my sub.
            I don't want to get into a "this brand is better than that" war but some other brands that may by worth looking at for your power requirements are Pioneer (TS-SW124D), MB Quart(RWE302), Blaupunkt(SW125.1 - 10") and Kicker (05C124).

              Box type would be the major factor before choosing the sub.

              Ported=Louder
              Sealed=Tighter

              Sealed may require more power if you have different tastes. I've got a POS Sony XPlod in a sealed box with 200 Watts RMS going into it from a Kenwood monoblock amp and I think it sounds fine.

                JL 13w0. Low power needed and still hits hard and can reach 16Hz. Also, needs less than a cubic ft.

                  50x4, I'm assuming thats at 4ohm. You bridge a pair of channels to 4ohm, power output doubles at 2 (generally), so 100x2 = 200.

                    100x2=200? You're bridging it twice? LOL That's like a double bridge... I haven't seen an amp which allows you to bridge 4 channels into 1 channel. In addition, that 4 channel would have to be stable to 1ohm on each channel to allow 4ohm operation when double-bridged.

                      what he means is bridging it to 4 ohms is like running both channels at 2 ohms, which "generally" gives double the power on each channel which and both channels add which gives 200w.

                      While this might be a nice assumption to make in my experience this dosent really happen in the real world, for example my 100w x 2 amp (at 4 ohms) bridges to 300w (at 4 ohms) rather than 400w.

                      basically that was my point, maybe i'm just being picky :P

                        a large number of amps are rated to do double-power at half-impedence (ie 2x at 2ohm vs 4ohm). I know there are a lot of amps that DON'T, but it seems like a larger number do. At least what comes thru the shop I work at. So lets say he has between 100 and 200W. Its not too big a difference anyways, if he pairs the right sub with it.

                          How much space are you going to have to play with? If I were you, I would go with an Atlas 12". It will move pretty good if you get the right enclosure for it. Plus it's only like $105!!!

                            i'm loving my JL 12W0. Sure it's old, and 'only' 125W, but i had a friend who ran his 300W all the time, and the JL was still solid for a year.

                            i'm running roughly 300W through the sub as well. I love JL

                              Image Dynamics 12" will do you just fine and sound better than most other subs. Most people like them better than JL because they are more efficient and are a high quality sub.
