  • Sound Card and Digital Processor

I need a little advice from someone who has a similar set up. I'm building a SQ system and i wanted to know if the VIA EPIA SP13000 board and a digital signal processor like an H-701 is my best bet?
Will this give me the cleanest signal possible?
Is there somthing else i will need for the audio part of the poject?
Maby another route i should take, if this not the most effective?
Price is not realy an issue quality is though.
Also any suggestions on maby a different digital processor one that is a stand alone unit because the H-701 has to be run by another alpine unit does it not? can it be controlled by the PC or is there a digital processor that can be controlled by a PC?
i dont want to add another unit if i don't have to but i will if the quality will be ensured.
I'm new to car PC thing i planed to buy a pre built off cartft.com because they had the best price. But if it wont do what i want ill just build one with a better sound card.

The VIA EPIA SP13000 has VIA VT1617A 6channel AC' 97 codec so if you have experience with this let me know. Noise in the line is also a large issue so i need to know if these componets will cause any problems. It looks as if this will work for what i want, but i'm unsure.
Any advice or comments will help

I just got up and running with something similar. Using the SPDIF out on my Epia 10K to an H701. Yes, the H701 needs a control unit such as the C701 but it is not that big. All along I thought I was going to have to mount a full DIN unit but when I got the C701 I was surprised to find out it is only 1 inch thick. I found a spot on my dash to mount it with velcro.

I can't speak to the sound quality yet as I havent even tuned mine (no time yet).
I'll warn you about some pitfalls though. You can refer back to this if you actually go this route.
The jumper position on the MB to enable the spdif is wrong in the documentation. Beware. I can’t speak to the Epia 12K though.
I used the Dayton spdif-toslink converter. It says it wants 6vdc. Ignore that and supply it with 12v. It will be fine.
Enable spdif out in the advanced tab of the volume control.
Software volume control is with the “wave” slider.
It is critical that you get the latest drivers for the AC' 97 codec because the driver I loaded first was crap. It made my mp3s sound like 1k sampling. Use the via arena for all drivers. If you get drivers from the links next to your specific MB you will get old drivers.

There are several others using this route for audio. Maybe one of them can speak to the sound quality. BTW, if money is no object, look at the H901.

BEST possible setup....get the H701 with the C701 controller and run a digital setup. It will be 100% noisefree if you install everything properly and will ensure the best possible sound from a pc.

The H701 addresses several vital sound quality issues that are present with a carputer. It gives you 4V preouts to go to your amp which is the minimum needed for an SQ system. It also gives you a volume nob which isn't present when you ditch your head unit. The controller is an awesome device and doesn't really get in the way. It is an inch tall and doesn't even need a din slot to be mounted. It gives you a graphical and paramtric eq up front and is a pre-processor with crossovers which allows you to go active if you choose. It's all around functionality and digital inputs makes the H701 an all-in-one piece for a perfect setup.

So did we decide the alpine unit is the best for the sound quality? no other brands i should look into.

Alpine = best for sound. I was in your shoes about 3 months ago and i remember posting a thread almost identical to this one. I did a lot of research before buying my h701....i looked into 5.1 amps that accept digital inputs (but i couldn't find one that put out enough power...i'd be settling with any one of them...besides the fact that most require a head unit). I also looked into other digital sound processors, and none of them offer as many features as the Alpine. Alpine makes great products and the H701 was practically designed for a carputer.

can you get good SQ out of a carPC with the Alpine unit?

              yes

are there any other units out there that wil work as seamlesly as the 701

              no

would we all like to see them?

              absolutely

so far, the only think that looks even remotely promising is the new 2x300 amp from focal that has optic in, can be daisy chained, and has software to tune it on your computer

I highly suggest you do a few searches as there have been TONS of threads about this topic. I'm not trying to flame you here, I understand wanting quick and simple answers just as much as the next guy, but you will probably learn quite a bit by searching.

For instance, thers's a thread that talks about nothing but the question "Can a carPC compete with a HU in SQ?"

Take a few looks around, it's possible, I'm proof of that.

There are other options, but they require extensive customization, and a lot more money than the 701 set-up costs...

sure do - got a Paxton Novi on it with a few other goodies. pulls strong, especially with a COMPLETELY stock block, valve covers haven't ever been off even.....and close to 100K miles even....still runs strong.

The R/T is a great truck, sure, there's faster things out there, always will be, but we enjoy the heck outta it, of course we have bigger and grander plans, but being fresh outta college we have other things to spend our money on first...all in due time, all in due time...just FYI - prepare to spend a crap load more money once that SC goes on, it never ends...but you probably were already fully aware of that

and a good tune (as with audio systems) is CRITICAL...wegained 125 rear wheel hp with a good tune on ours...

i am in the same boat right now. However, I dont want to have to spend 6-700 bucks to get this setup. I also dont want to have to have a display/controller. Its too bad there are not really any other options out there.

i will probably be selling my pxa-h700 really soon. i'm trying a different route that we've been discussing in another thread. I'll be going 4v out from soundcard on balanced lines directly into my amp. sooo... let me know, i think the going rate for a used alpine is about $350 bucks but i'm not sure.

You can run with the c701 completely disconnected. You would then have to use the computer for volume but it would work just fine that way.

a engine tune with the Paxton S/C set-up on a completely stock motor. Slapped it on there, set fuel pressure to read 50 psi at idle. Set the MSD BTM. Then went to the dyno and with someone who knows what they are doing, JUST tuning the aux injectors with the Split Second controller and the BTM timing unit, we gained an ADDITIONAL 125 rwhp.

                              tuning is EVERYTHING
