  • How should I do my audio?

    Hey guys,

New to carputers and audio, not new to computers/tech at all though.

    Got some questions for ya.

I am planning on using a Xenarc 7" touch screen mounted in the dash of my 04 Civic. I plan on replacing the two DIN's including the CD player with the touch screen.

I plan on having the carputer in the back, I was probably going to use a USB2.0 Sound Blaster unit for the audio (atleast for now) It has RCA in/out and optical in/out.

Now my problem is getting the audio out of my car speakers... Im not sure where to start. I was going to replace my stock cd player with one a little more functional (with rca in/out) to use with subs in the future.

I planned to use RCA from the carputer to the deck, and control it that way... But I have a problem, I have no where to mount the deck. The only place I could find is only about 4" deep and I dont want the deck to stick out another 3-4 inches.

Now im not "set" on keeping the deck... but my reasoning for using it was so that I coudl easily add subs later, I could control my volume with a volume control, I could use it as my cd player/fm radio player.

Now I could install a USB slot cd rom drive for the cd's if needed (hardly ever use) and put an fm module into the carputer... But what would all my audio equipment plug into? and how could I easily control the volume? I plan on using Windows XP Pro with Media Center Edition 2005.

Another idea I had was to get a EQ with the RCA in/out and use that instead of a deck since you can get them with a depth of about 4". (By the way can anyone reccomend a good one??.. maybe even one with FM??) I found this:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/BOSS-CAR-EQUALIZ...QQcmdZViewItem
Not sure on the dimensions though.

I could then figure out a way to mount the USB slot loaded cd rom drive.

What do you guys think??? I'm looking for a cheap solution since my only real cost is going to be the Xenarc screen. So far I am happy with my audio in the car but in the future as I mentioned about I would like to add some small subs in the future.

    Thanks in advance!!

check the faq forum and it'll show you how to connect a pc w/o using a head unit.

as far as controlling the volume, you can do that on the software side and then go out from your soundcard into:
a)(if your soundcard has multiple outputs) run 1/8 min to rca cables from your soundcard to your amps
    b) active crossover-- (i.e. audiocontrol 24xs) go stereo out from the soundcard or usb dac into the active x-over and that'll split up your signals to go to your amps inputs
c)stereo out from dac or soundcard into an amp with passive outputs (i.e. elemental designs' amps have this)-- you'd hook it up like this: soundcard-> main amp input, main amp passive output-> sub amp

if you're looking for a really nice budget system I'd suggest going with a soundblaster live 5.1 pci card (install the kxproject drivers) and then go into a audiocontrol 24xs x-over/linedriver.

i had that setup in v1.2 or my install and it sounded suprisingly great.

do yourself a favor and go read the faq emporium before you ask another question. there is a ton of knowledge w/in those pages

So far I cant find anything about doing it without a head unit... Atleast not what im looking for.

Currently I dont think I have an amp... atleast not one I can see.

What I was thinking about doing was going from PC to EQ to Speakers. Then later adding an amp just for the subs and connecting it to the EQ aswell.

      Would that work??

doing it without a head unit?

that's how a TON of us have done it, I know there's a FAQ about it.

Heck, I've done it without a head unit.

a tad more research would yield information that would give you the answer to your question about the EQ.

You need to find out if your car has a stock amplifier first.

I belive the Deck has a built in amplifyer.

I dont want to really purchase an "upgrade" amp right now. Instead I am looking for a solution such as something with all the features as my current deck (minus CD and FM) but smaller...

My question is wether something such as a EQ Pre Amp would work. I could mount that in the dash around my LCD.

I am still reading faq's and have found out how to do it with amps.. but I was looking for a easier/cheaper solution for the mean time.

Looks like he is using an EQ and a 4 channel amp.
Are there not any EQ's with a built in amp similar to my deck?

a couple options. hide the head unit behind the screen, hack it so you can mount the volume knob so that it's accessible. and then figure out how to get aux input into that deck (www.pac-audio.com has a lot of these devices) option two. get a couple 't-amps' and use those as inexpensive 2 chan amps. or build your own like zapwizard.

nope - they are all pretty much crap.

in the world of car audio, at least currently, if you want good equipment, it's usually all separate.

essentially it is just like the amp that you find in the decks, and those are pretty much crap... jcwhitney used to carry those $19 EQs with 800watts of power... all that in a 2x6x6 package... even had a spectrum analyzer... ah, the good old days...
