  • will this setup sound better than....

I want my new system to sound better than my old, thats all I care about with the sound system in my car. doesnt have to be perfect, just has to sound better than the one I previously had, this is always my rule with sound systems.
so the system is has to sound better than is this: Alpine HU w/ bass engine plus, infinity referance 2way 6.5" speakers (4 of them) running directly off the deck, audiobahn 12" natural sound subwoofer running off lanzar 2ch amp bridged at 8ohms running probably 100-150Wrms. the alpine had a s/n ratio of 105dB and had 4V preouts.

the system I want to run in this car:
    laptop
    audigy2 nx,
    Blaupunkt GTA 4 4-channel car amplifier 55 watts RMS x 4 .
    Kenwood KFC-1660S 6-1/2" 2-way car speakers
infinity referance 12" SVC sub in custom tuned box

I would appreciate honest opinions about if this will sound better (the new system is in a civic Si hatchback and the old system was in a jeep cherokee) and louder than the old system. I would like a reasonably loud and smooth sound system that also sounds very clear and responsive. my reasoning for going the 3ch on a 4ch amp route is simple, it costs less than getting either a 4ch+mono amp or 2ch+mono amp route, even though that might be much better, and it simplifies amp wiring and takes up less space.

any questions, well, post 'em, and i'll answer 'em.
now if I could just figure out how to put a computer on the SV.....

all depends and has to do with construction. a honda civic is something totally different from a cherokee....

running your speakers off of an amp will in most cases sound better then directly from the HU. the speakers you have are better ones than the kenwoods. the infinity sub is a better choise than audiobahn. as for the rest of it.... it all depends on your construction-skills and how much effort you are wanting to make, to let it sound good....

but then again, that's oly my opinion

my audio budget is gonna be around $450 with all 4 speakers, amp, sub, and wiring.
I can build good boxes, have for all my cars so far, 3/4 mdf and liquid nails and real nails, silicone caulking and polyfill inside. this after designing the internal airspace on cad and having it all fit inside the car hidden away

the infiniti sub reference sucks, i'll rather get a better one, i've had 4 infiniti 6.5 inch references coupled with 1 infiniti reference 12 inch sub, and the sub gave a push but not as loud as some other subs. It actually blew in a few months and i'm in the market for a new one. I'm thinking alpine type r or comp vr

Also my amp was a 5 channel hifonics zeus zx8000 and my car is a 95 acura integra (so we share almost the same specs) and also i don't get how your going to power 4 speakers with the 4 channel amp and still have power for the sub. Hence my amp does 4 x 55 and 200 rms for the sub i believe, if i had bought lower ohm speakers i could of had it at 4x 110 and 1 x 300 ... silly me

would you consider going with a 2.1 setup? it'll allow more money to go into the front speakers, improve your soundstage, and save money on the amp.

(i'm running a 2.1 system in my car and would never put in rear speakers. money isn't an issue, it was more sound quality)

well that is essentially what I am doing is going with a 2.1 system, I shall link the front and rear for each side together. if I could go with nicer speakers up front and none in the rear that would be acceptable. however I want this to sound great at all volumes I am gonna listen to it, and I have often found that the betterspeakers dont really sound great till you put a lot of power and volume into them. I would prefer to use the 6.5" referances all the way around again, but last time I got them 1/2 price at a random sale, which I guess I could scout for again this year, but.....
I admit components do sound better, but I dont have the cash for those either, though I do have some very nice sail panels to put them on.
if I can find deals on better stuff at some point through the winter then I will buy that stuff, but otherwise...

(currently ripping music onto this computer as it will be going in the car some day)

do you have any recomendations as per what would possibly sound better than what I put together for around $450?

I've never tried this, but scott is Very damn familiar with his audio stuff!! I would listen to scott for some advice, i would also have done the 2.1 setup if it wasn't for my equipment that i already bought and installed which would be a waste of time and money.

well I came to a conclusion today, this is one of my hobbies and I dont have to complete it tommorrow or next week and it can be a progress, so I can build it up slower, and more expensive. to that end I will spend more on the speakers, possibly getting more of the referance 6.5's that I had in the jeep, or maybe go with some of the ED stuff that scott has been recomending, but not right at the moment.
I am going to go ahead and predict a $1200 limit on myself for this entire project, considering a touch screen and audio card for my laptop is just about all thats needed for the "brain", I can put more than I had assumed into the stereo.

that is a smart way to approach this. may i suggest to spend the money on your amp first? If you get a nice set of speakers and underpower them you may be tempted to push them to the point of distortion...and end up ruining them. if you get a nice amp first, then you can drive your existing infinities cleanly and then when you do get the money for a set of components you'll have the amp ready to go.

dont have those infinities anymore, they sold with the alpine and the rest with the jeep, got $750 more on trade in for that, considering the amp I traded a really old snowboard for and the speakers I got for $100, and the cd player I got half price at $250...... I'd say it was worth losing
but yeah that makes sense, though I dont want to push more than 50w to the door speakers, i want it to sound nice even when loud, but my limit of hearing pain tells me there is a limit. the sub will not likely get more than 400watts, ever, more likely 300 MAX. I do like the idea of music all around me though, considering the speakers throw sound directly into my feet, and the kick panel enclosures cost as much as another pair of good speakers would be for the rear, and with my large feet I would be woefully unhappy like that. however since the control screen for the system will be located about where the rear mirror is, i will have a double din dash opening for some smaller speakers in there.... kinda brings up the idea that more speakers could help the imaging. 2.1 would be great for me if I could have it play 2 channels and a sub but have it be left and right while still retaining front and rear, just having the front and rear be the same signal with typical music.

I just had a revelation and checked out ebay, I could put 2 sets of type r compononents and a type r 12" in my car for all of about $400 after shipping on the ebay stores. Throw an eclipse 5ch (4x50 + 1x300) amp in there and I have a system worthy of boasting about. all for less than $800 including wires, and that will DEFINATELY sound better than the jeep.....
now, just gotta get winter tires for the Si, a season pass to Bolton, and I am ready for audio gear!
