  • Need wiring help for 2005 Grand Prix.

    Hey all,

I'm hooking up an amp in my 05 Grand Prix with the factory stereo (not Bose) and I'm using a line out converter hooking it to the rear speakers so I can run my RCA cables, but I'm not sure which wires are + and -. Also, where is the best place to hook the remote turn on lead for the amp? Do I have to pull the deck out, or is there a place under the hood that I can hook onto? I'd prefer not to pull the deck if at all possible since I have to run the power cable to the trunk anyway, I'd rather just run it with that.

    Thanks for any input!!!!

    Derek

Crap...I think dark blue and brown are +...or maybe the wires aren't even that color...it's been too long.

There was a rule I used to remember and I thought it was the darker wire was positive. But don't quote me on that one. Use a small battery and touch it to the speakers. If the speaker pushes forward then you have the right polarity. If it pushes backwards you have reverse polarity.

One easy place for remote is the back of any cigarette lighter.

My cig lighters are also constant 12v, I've actually never heard of a car where they're switched...

Anyway the best place to hook the remote wire to would obviously be the remote wire, yes it's on the back of your deck. You could use the ignition wire too, but that would probably also involve removing the deck, or at least more work.

yes I should have mentioned to check to make sure it's swtiched. Whoops!

I have never owned a car where the cig was always on. From what I have seen some have a swtiched AND a constant power. I wish I had a constant power one sometimes.

again... this isn't always the case. when you remove the factory head unit in the c5 corvette it disables the acc wire in hte harness. I had to tap off a wire in one of the wire looms or i could have tapped off of fuse #22.

ok, is the Grand Prix like the C5 where it disables the acc wire when the deck is removed? When I tried to find the acc wire with my test light, the only wire that would light up was the constant power wire, no other wire would light up with the key on.

I even tried the harness for the little computer thingy (real technical I know, lol), and only the battery feed would light up. I know there's an acc wire in there somewhere, but I'm not sure which one it is, or how to find it.

Oh, and I checked the cig lighter, and it has constant power.

You could tap right off the accessory wire under the dash. It would require removing a lot of tape and loom. Should be a heavy guage brown wire. Again check this with a multimeter/test light to be sure.

do you have an acc wire on your hvac? if not get the multi meter out and start checking your fuses.

you probably have a retained accessory power circiut that get's killed when the radio is removed.... from what I remember of it, there is a module that you need to add when removing the factory radio, it's mainly to retain the onstar, but it also resores the rap system.... it works through a data buss & the bcm....

just jumping stuff out is not always the best way to approach this really...

I'll have to take the deck out again and see if I can get the test light in the back of the stereo connectors while it's hooked up.

I'm keeping the factory system in the car for now, it sounds pretty good as is, I just wanted to add an amp and a sub just to get a little more of a kick then what the stock system can give.

turbocad6, the retained accessory power circiut that you're talking about, would I still be able to run my turn on lead to my amp from that asuming I can find the wire?

If that doesn't pan out, I'll check the hvac, and the acc wire under the dash.

the rap circiut is when you park & turn the key off, the radio & windows & stuff continue to be powered for up to 20 min unless you open a door.... the rap circuit can be tapped at the stock radio, but when you remove the radio it no longer functions...

I would highly recommend retaining the rap circiut by adding the onstar module if the radio is removed... then nothing needs to be butchered at all

with the stock radio, check for ign power at the radio, but with the radio actually plugged in so the data lines are intact...

so scott_fx, does that mean your rap isn't functioning anymore either? what about your onstar?

Do not use a test light on a radio that is controled by the bcm. You will short the data line and thats not to good! Remove the hush panel and the panel on the end of the dash. The bcm is located at the end of the dash with three connectors. I have provided the pinouts. Pin 23 on connector 1 is switched accy. Do yourself and your expensive car a favour and buy a digital multimeter before you touch anything because if things go sour no dealer on the planet will help you with warranty. Trust me I am a manager at a company that has the cotract to repair delco electronics.

rap wasn't important to me. there are modules from pac-audio and top-down tech that will allow you to retain rap but i didn't see a need for it. as far as onstar...i only have a c5...no onstar :-( though i dont think i'd use it either :-)
