  • Unusual amp shut off problem....please help!

Hello to all....I'm a newbie here with a problem with my amp in my truck. I noticed this the other day when driving home. I had the stereo moderately loud, nothing fancy. All of the sudden, the amp driving my mid/highs shut off. The sub amp worked fine. I got home and shut my truck off and then turned it back on, the mid/high amp worked again(for like 5 sec). So, I figured since everything worked except that amp, it was the amp. I took it out and replaced it with the amp that was driving the subs. It worked fine until yesterday....and now it does the same thing. It plays for a few min or few hours, just depends. So, I took my dvd player back and exchanged it. That made no difference. I then tried my old Alpine CD player, but with no luck. The amp would work until it was on for a few min. This happens whether the radio is cranked or not. I thought it might be the remote wire, but its the same wire that went to the sub amp when this first happened, so I don't think its that. What else could it be?? I'm only running Infinity 6x8's in both doors, and they are hooked up to the amp @ 2ohm stereo, with the high pass crossover working. I don't think its the amp, cause I tried two separate ones with the same results. I also tried 3 head units with the same results. Could the RCA cables cause the amp to shut off?? Could I have resistance built up in my speaker wires?? I run 14 gauge speaker wire from the amp up to where the factory wires go to the speakers and hooked it up there. Could that be my problem? I've done that before with other vehicles and never had a problem like this. I can give you the model numbers for everything, but I don't think that would help. Please help....I hate not having a radio.

have you checked your power and ground wires? no loose connections or anything?

      First of all:

      http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=82850

      Second:

Use a multimeter and check the voltage going the amp at the power, ground and remote turn on. You might have a loose connection somewher and unless you can verify the voltages going to the amp, you will keep replacing things until you finally find the problem.

Is the amp going into protect mode or just turning off?

I am totally guessing, but check the resistance of your fuse too after verifying you have proper voltages going to amps. I have seen bad fuses that will look ok but they are actually bad.

Again, you might get better/faster help in a dedicated car audio forum. We put carputers in our cars.

The power wire is a 4 gauge coming from the battery, then is divided into two 8 gauge wires going to both amps. When this first happened, the sub amp continued to play, as loud as I could crank it, and never shut off. That's what made me think it was the amp. The 12vpower wire and remote both come from the same place, so I kinda ruled them out. I didn't think about the ground though. Would that let the amp play for a bit, then shut off though?? I'm going to try hooking up the amp using the sub amps wiring and see what happens then. If it works ok with that wiring, then I guess I should check the ground, and possibly the RCA cables. I've just never had this happen, so I feel like I'm learning all over again..lol

if you have a bad ground and/or power, the amp could play for a while, but -for instance- when there's a bump in the road, if power/ground/both aren't connected properly, or aren't secured well enough, they could come loose/move out of place and the amp will shut off...

How big is the wire for the grounds?

Hey guys do a quick check that the positive and negative outputs from the amp and make sure that they are not shorting together. This will cause the amp to shut off or go to protection mode. A good place to start looking for a short is at the speakers that are being driven, they can touch the metal in the doors and short.

First off, is your amp stable for 2ohm stereo? Secondly I would be checking the connections at the crossovers and the speakers, one little short is all it takes.

they SHOULD be the same size as the power with SOLID connections.

Check to make sure the impedance of your speakers matchs the impedance of the amp. If you have them wired as a 2 ohm load and the amp only rated for 4 ohms, that will cause the amps to go into protection mode too.

Alos, like the rest of them said, check to make sure all connections are secure.

This boys onto it . My guess is that the 6*8 is not a 2 ohm speaker there are not many if any that are ,unless you have them in parallel, most are 4 ohm while house stereo are 8 ohm *(i believe) your amp will be overloading .

I dont think its a wiring problem or you would more than likly get a interference with your sub amp just a spk prob, but check your conns anyway. RCA's wont shut an amp down they only transfer the audio signal,

lol, I know that, I was just making sure the OP had that, could be a reason for his/her troubles...
