  • Tips for best use of toslink (SPDIF) out on S/C

I'm interested in utilizing the optical out on my soundcard, but I'm wondering how to best utilize that clean optical signal with an amplifier.

For one, how do I split the sub signal out to be independent of the L/R channels?

I realize most audio players in Windows play in stereo, but do they also provide a bass channel?

I guess I'm just confused as to how to use the toslink and if someone could give a short "primer"/explanation on how it's utilized, I'd really appreciate it.

    Thank you!!

Sorry about that. Forgot about Rule #1: CHECK THE FAQ.

If I have any additional questions, I'll post a more educated answer.

Thank you for the patient reply.

The best use is probably to use optical output to feed a sound processor like the Alpine H701 (discontinued) or something similar that has crossovers to split the subwoofer signal from the main left and right speakers. That is what I intend to do with my carputer. I am using an M Audio Transit USB sound card and sending optical out to an Alpine H701 that I purchased before they were sold out. Alpine has a newer model that may have the same or similar capability but I have not researched it. The 701 has crossovers, sophisticated EQ, time alignment, and ability to split front speakers into tweeter and mid woofer bands in addition to the subwoofer crossover. I think this processing is best done in dedicated components instead of trying to do it all with the PC. The Alpine also provides extra audio inputs that I can use for HD Radio, and OEM head unit. I am not ready to get rid of the OEM system yet.

I've discovered that the Zapco DSP6-SL is one of the best solutions for this predicament. It gives you INCREDIBLE control over your channels in terms of crossover, as well as delay and equalization. Plus, you can completely control the unit through your CarPC using Zapco's DPN software.

Just another option for those who can't find the Alpine H701 or Panasonic CY-AC300.

The Alpine PXA-H701's are discontinued? That sucks. I have one and its awesome. I have a Creative sound card -> digital out -> Alpine processor -> Amps. Works great. Only downside is that you need a seperate controller or Alpine compatible headunit to control the processor.

                  I've got a zapco dc360.4 and a dc500.1, and I love it, but...

I wish the software had keyboard shortcuts or accept windows commands etc..

that way i could control volume within RR to the zapco dsp, or change the gain on my sub amp within rr etc...

Behringer DCX2496 does the same thing, but costs 1/3 as much. You just need a DC-AC inverter.
