  • Suggest for me some OBD-II hardware.

I can probably write the software if I can find a driver somewhere for Java or .NET but what do I need in terms of hardware to plug it into my laptop? OBD-Serial adapter and then a serial-serial cable? That it? What's the cost on the adapter for a reliable but basic one? At first I want to be able to read but I might eventually want to get into adjusting things.

Our hardware www.obdpros.com will allow you to send any bus message to the vehicle and read the responses.

    Thanks

The one Paul linked is a custom chip that allows you to plug into the serial port of your laptop (or usb), and send ascii commands over the serial line to get responces according to either the OBDII pid list, or ELM-style commands. I've not yet come across an ELM327 command it does not support. I bought one and I recommend it.
