    Hello everyone,

    I need the help of a few owners/drivers of Diesel fuel vehicles to do some basic data logging so I we can figure out how to accurately calculate fuel economy / consumption for Diesel engine vehicles. If you are interested please read on.

    The next release of DashCommand will include a sophisticated fuel economy / fuel consumption dashboard that shows instantaneous fuel consumption and average fuel consumption over 18 periods of time. The periods are grouped into short term, medium term, and long term numbers which greatly aids in visualizing average fuel consumption over time and provides the means to change your driving habits, if you so wish, to reduce fuel consumption.

    The gauge and the underlying calculations are working very well for gasoline powered vehicles but they don’t currently support Diesel fuel vehicles. A Diesel engine’s fuel metering system is not based on air mass like that of a gasoline engine and I need to develop a new set of fuel consumption calculations for Diesel engines.

    I have a few ideas on how to do this but I need your help because I don’t have access to a wide variety of Diesel vehicles and I want to do this fast.

    • Diesel engine vehicle, OBD-II / EOBD compliant with the following PIDs supported:
      - MAP (manifold absolute pressure)
      - RPM
      - IAT (intake air temperature)
      - LOAD_ABS (absolute engine load)
      - FUEL_RATE [optional]
    • A laptop or carPC running Windows XP, Vista or 7.
    • An OBD-II interface device, ELM 327 compatible such a OBDLink, or an Innovate Motorsports OT-2 (Wifi mode).
    • Less than 30 minutes of your time.
    • A free license to DashCommand (a $50 value) or a license to ScanXL (a $100 value) if you already have purchased DashCommand.
    • Access to the pre-release version of DashCommand so you can experience the new features before anyone else.
    • Install the pre-release version of DashCommand
    • Record a log file
    • Send the log file via email.
    • Possibly test the new fuel consumption calculations

    I’m looking for a variety of vehicles, including trucks and cars, large and small, turbo and normally aspirated, old (1996-2003) and newer (2004-2010). If you are interested and want to help, please send me a PM or reply to this post and I'll set you up with the software you'll need.

    I would be happy to help if my car is able to, I drive a 2006 VW Jetta TDI, it has a Turbo 1.9L, I keep detailed records on my mileage on my phone already.

    About how long of a record are you wanting for testing, a day? week? month?

      I'm glad you've offered to help. Initially, all I need is a short log file recorded from DashCommand. The recording only needs to be about 10 minutes long done while you are driving normally. Your detailed records will come in handy to confirm that the new calculations are working accurately.

      I'm sure your car supports the PIDs I need. It's a perfect candidate. Please confirm that you do have an OBD-II interface device and Windows computer to run DashCommand. You can do this via PM if you like. If all is good, we can get started right away.

        Im up for it, Exactly what I was looking for lol, I have a 2004 Diesel Jetta 1.9L BEW 4 Cyl. Let me know Thanks!!

        One thing i'm missing is the Elm 32 device, I have one that works with vagcom, its a simple cable i think. Not elm 327 compliant. I am actually looking tonight at obdII software and what interface cable they use so i can purchase it, I want to get my car computer back together. It should be going by this Friday. Lemme Know If its ok, or too late.

        I use road runner and my ultimate goal would be to get something that would display the boost pressure from the turbo, and maybe track it?, I have a pipe that is liking to bust on me, Monitoring the pressure would be way easier than crawling under and inspecting the pipe, The other thing is the Mileage I have about 8 months of data on an access db that i have been keeping track of it with. I have a mx tracking program I wrote, and I'm trying to figure out a way to get the cars mileage so the program could track and enter things in more automatic.

        Does your program have the ability to dump the mileage to a file?

        Either way I'm up for testing and giving you the data you need to get this working.

          2004 F350 Diesel


          I would like to participate in your DashCommand research work for diesel vehicles.
          I have a Ford F350 6.0L 2004 diesel p/u truck. I have an onboard laptop connected to the internet via at&t modem. I do not yet have the OBDII interface but if you recommend one I will purchase it. I have been considering getting one anyway.

            Sounds like you'll be ready in a week or so. If I'm still looking for help at that point your definately in.

            The next release of DashCommand will have a built-in calculated PID for boost pressure but it depends on the MAP. So if your Jetta outputs MAP you'll get boost pressure but it will not be as accurate as a really boost gauge. It would probably be good enough for your purposes.

            At present DashCommand doesn't have the ability to export data in the way you are wanting.

                Thanks!! I ordered it last night should have it thursday friday ish. I have another computer to use to get your data, I'll let you know when i have it, hopefully you still need a tester thanks!!

                  While it would be awesome if you shared your algorithm, I don't expect you to. Would you be willing to share the data others have collected for you?

                    I'm sad to say that the users from this forum weren't much help. Blankstar85 is now using the final product and it seems to be working for him. The others never followed through with their commitment to help and made off with a free license of DashCommand.

                    One of our customers from Australia was able to provide me the datalogs I required.

                    Anyone that can read the OBD-II standard and has a basic understanding of how a Diesel engine works can figure it out. MAJOR HINT: SAE.LOAD_PCT

                    Once the other software vendors figure it out I'll be more open with the calculation method.

                        The newest versions of DashCommand do support Diesel vehicles and I no longer require volunteers to provide data.

                          I have a Hyundai Tucson CRDi Softroader vehicle and I'd like to use Dashcommand specifically for the above feature. I have an ELM327 OBD2 -USB adapter.

                          I'd like to try the demo first so that I can be sure that the application is fully compatible with my vehicle before I make the full version purchase.

                          What exactly are the limitations in the demo version of DashCommand?

                            I have tried yesterday dashcommand ( demo ) using plx kiwi wifi.
                            I have set it to connect on port com1 ( i used com2tcp for mapping ) as it had no wifi options.
                            It showed as connected, but no data was coming through.

                            Is it because of demo, or why ?

                              This will be interesting to see on modern cars with Diesel particulate filters.
                              Especially what happens during regeneration when the fuel usage doubles or sometimes even triples.
