  • analogue sensor to CAN?

    I want to install an EGT sensor on my truck, but I want to continue using my SCII for trans temp, oil temp and IAT and not have to install an additional gauge. I am looking for some small device that would be wired to the CAN bus, accept the input from a temp sensor and then allow me to query that over the CAN bus. I'd pick some header value that is likely unused by the truck (0x7FF) and when I query that with a mode and PID, it will return a 2 byte value that will indicate the rading of the temp sensor. I thought I saw something like this at one point, but I cant recall. I'm not much of a hardware designer so I'd like to find something already built.

    This is the closest thing I have found so far. I also found the source code, but I'm looking for something already packaged.

      if You are ready to program a PIC, then the cheapest "complete" hardware solution is a chinese ELM327 clone: PIC18F2480/2580 with integrated CAN controller, MCP2551 CAN transceiver, FT232 USB to serial chip - just solder some thin wire to the smd legs / pads and write Your own code for the PIC...

        Alex,

        How soon do you need it, and how small do you need it to be? We can probably hack ECUsim code to do what you want, and use it to program OBDLink S (its hardware is very similar).

          Time isnt really an issue and size isnt that important as there is a good bit of space behind my dash. Its a personal project and I'm going to try and have the thermocouple hardware and amp by the end of the month.           Do you think this is all compatible with the OBDlink HW?

            Wow, that CAN bus node project is COOL.

            You could add sensors to the node an query them via your own person CAN code, right?

              That is the idea, yes.

              I have a CAN to analog dev kit coming (http://www.phytec.com/products/can/c...-eval-kit.html), but the cost to reproduce it would be a bit pricey at 139 for just the CAN piece(http://www.phytec.com/products/can/c...kmicromod.html). I think Vitaly's idea of using the OBDlink is cool and will be cheaper, but I'm not sure how many sensors he can support.
