  • New to OBD2

Please forgive me if I ask simple questions, I just got an ELM327 USB interface and I can't seem to get it to work....
When I use any of the software that came with the unit it just won't find the interface.
Windows has it installed as Com 4 called USB-Serial interface, however Easy OBD finds something on Com3 but nothing on com 4. I'm confused.....

Do I need to have the OBD2 plug connected to the car to discover?(wanted to make sure it installed properly first before plugging into the car).
Using XP pro service pack 3 and have used usb-serial stuff previously with no problems.

On the back of the unit it has
    Elm327 USB
    Part Number. 9016
    Controller. ELM327
    Firmware Revision. v1.4
    Baud rate. 38400

    Any guidance would be appreciated

Yes, the tool needs to be powered from the battery in order to be discoverable.
