hmm if the 96 corolla was made in Aus then its not OBDII.......i think most cars from 96 on made in japan are OBDII...

our 2000 hilux made in thailand is not OBDII....however the 2000 Echo is OBDII

Just because it's built in Australia has little bearing no whether an "OBD2" scan tool can connect to it. OBD2 is a US regulation. But the access to vehicle data for diagnostics is a worldwide technician need. If it's a 1996, look under the dashboard (not under the hood / bonnet) for the connector. It will be within a couple feet of the steering wheel if it exists. Draw it and post what you see including the pins in the connector. Very unlikely that the vehicle communication methodology is different on an Australian built / assembled vehicle than rest of world. Way too expensive to engineer and support a vehicle communication method for just one market.

You might find that the fact that it is a 1996 is the larger issue. If Australia didn't legislate a requirement to have an "OBD2" type standard (like at least in US), then Toyota didn't have to market an "OBD2" compliant vehicle in that market for that year. But, later years the older diagnostic platforms would have been sold out and adopted a newer Toyota worldwide electrical platform design, which highly likely met US OBD2 regulation (and others).

OBDII using ISO, VPW etc protocols...was made mandatory for US Vehicles from 1996 onwards.........Australian Made cars or cars exported here are not required to have OBDII 'US Style'....so therefore thats why u have some cars that are and are not OBDII here in aus.....hence the 2000 Toyota Hilux made in thailand that doesnt export the model to the US having the same OBDII connector under the dash but no Scanner.....Scanguage or BR3 can connect with it as it uses its own Toyota type diagnosis system not OBDII ISO.....the Echo is a different story as its a car that is manufactured for countries all over the world including the US...it also has the OBDII diagnostic connector under the dash and has the US OBDII ISO Protocol so i can use any scanner ie scanguage...BR3...digimoto....

All EFI cars have on board diagnostics in some form or another......but Australian cars after 1996 Do not neccesarily have OBDII...

Ofcourse the 96 corolla has On board diagnostics...its got to...its fuel injected with a tonne of sensors....but more than likely not the US OBDII platform

              aussie 96 corolla

yeah i relise that the car being australian made has no bearing on weather it has obd 2 but we checked our other 2 aussie made cars that are between 1998 and 2002 models and they dont have it either..... the guys from toyota australia have no idea wat obd is let alone obd 2

The 96 Corolla made in Canada DOES have ODBII, but the information you can gather from it is quite limited.
I think the US model does not have ODBII until 1997.
