  • CHEAP ODBII.... I think...

Hey the other day i was at a local auto parts store and i saw they sell this OBDII adapter cable with software for only $100. Its only good for 90hrs, meaning the software is like a trial version but im pretty positive that can be cracked cause they also sell one for 300hrs. I gotta get into the software and see what i can find. Anyone every seen this before? I hadnt.....

im not encouraging you cracking the software...and this thread might be deleted soon, but what software and autoparts store was this? and how much for a full version of the software? which interface is the data cable for? you might be able to get away without using their software...
    rebuilding carpc... kinda..

The cable is serial, rs-232 i believe. I was more interested in the adapter. I saw it at autozone. It came with some proprietary software cd, and the adapter itself looked kinda cheap, leading me to think one could PROBABLY use different software with it.... I mean $100 is cheap for this!!!

Okay, first you are talking about breaking software rules, not good. Second, OBDII for $100? I think I'll pass. There is one on the forums that is being developed, that is going to be open-source, and another that is freeware, with a much cheaper adapter/cable.

like i said, im more interested in the adapter than the software. I was simply pointing out that it could be done and that its out there, in stores. Not only online. Thats the 1st ive seen of it in a store for that cheap, and thats throw-away. And if the adapter can work with other types of software, then thats 1 more plus.
We'll see what happens with the development of the hardware/software here...

Are you sure this isnt the kind that records data and then you plug it into your pc to do diagnostics? Maybe it records for 100 hours then you can go read it on the pc?

Why not just get the one at obddiagnostics.com for $100? That one comes with free software, plus Frodo is developing a skinnable interface that will support it (what kiltjim was referring to). I got the kit for even less, you can make your own for less than $50, depending on how fancy you want to get.

Yeah after i posted this, i looked around alittle more and found that one. It seems worth the bucks but whats the software like? user friendly? I tried 1 package that was just freakin retarded! said it did all that, and then it was really basic. Not useful........

I think you have it. I saw these at Sears the other day. They also have one that will record 300 hours of data.
