  • Another Carputer Question

Can I use this in my car to run my laptop and LCD monitor? Im still a bit unsure on which to buy. I actually have one of these and I want to see if you guys think this would be a good idea to wire up to my car battery. I dont care about the auto startup for my laptop and monitor. I would rather control it myself so this way I wont have to run it for short trips to and from stores. Here's some pics of my current project.

400 Watt Power Inverter - POWERS UP TO 3.6 AMPS
    Model Number: VEC1024

Converts 12 Volt DC To 110/120 Volt AC Household Power

    Features Include:

Soft Start Technology (SST) - Gradually and safely ramps up the output voltage to start difficult motorized loads and protects sensative appliance circuits.

Automatic Reset - Restarts automaticaly if the inverter shuts down.

Turbo Cooling - Extends life of the inverter by keeper components cooler.

    Dual AC Outlets

    LED power and fault indicators

Heavy-duty cable clamps for high output direct battery connections

    Plugs into vehicle accessory outlet

12V DC Power cord for lower wattage use

    Maximum Efficiency: Approx. 90%

No Load Current Draw: 0.4 Amps

    Input Voltage Range: 10.5 - 15.5 VDC

    Under Voltage ShutDown: 10.0 Volts

Low Voltage Alarms Activation: 10.6 Volts

Wave Form: Filtered Modified Sine Wave

    Internal Fuse: 25 Amp

    Maximum Continuous Power: 400 Watts

    Surge Capacity: 800 Watts

Such a nice car why ruin it with something like that?

What type of power connections does your monitor have? many of em have cigarette adapters.

However the laptop will be succesfully powered by it

of course it would be hidden in the trunk. For the monitor I have a cigarette adapter and the big AC plug. I was thinking of buying the Carnetix CNX-P1900but do I really need this? Plus, its soldout.

For the monitor I could just run it direct to the cigarette lighter but even when I turn off the car, the monitor is still powered! Im thinking of installing a switch to control it if I go this route!

This is pretty much the function of what im looking for! Monitor/Laptop: Manual turn-on/turn-off

Well inverters can cause many problems, if you search around you can get an idea of some of them.

In general they just aren't very efficient because they are converting a dc signal to ac, and then the regular power supply converts ac back to dc.

the "car" power supplies convert dc-dc, and are therefore much more efficient
