  • homemade homelink roof console

Ok, here goes, I was jealous of my girlfriend's audi's built in homelink system, and was tired of having two different garage door openers bulking up my sunvisor. So I looked on ebay to find one for my car. There was hardly replacement visors, let alone any with homelink built in, and no overhead consoles for this car. So if you can't find it, make it.

I started by buying a module that was pulled from a junked car with one in it.
Then I tried to figure out where it would go, there's a great spot in between the visors on the headliner.
Next, I took the unit and measured out a piece of thin plywood, and cut out the hole in the center of it.
Then, I wrapped the unit in cloth and applied fiberglass resin, then a layer of fiberglass mat with more resin.
Then, after it cured, I sanded it down, applied bondo filler, sanded again, more bondo, and so on until it was pretty smooth.
Originally I planned on painting it, but while I was waiting for the bondo to cure I found some vinyl that matched my dash and picked up a yard for a couple bucks.
After it was smooth, I wrapped the unit with the vinyl and used spray adhesive to get it to stick.
I then cut the excess vinyl, and applied industrial strength velcro so that it will stick to the headliner.
I wired it up and programmed the buttons. Now it actually looks like it came with the car.

Pictures are worth a thousand words, so here's a few thousand of them:

nice, anyone else do this? It's nice to show that it can be done, for fairly inexpensive. I got my module from a 96 dodge avenger on ebay for about $30 shipped, and already had the fiberglass resin and bondo, but these can be had for cheap too. Homelink sells the modules for around $200.

BTW, ours are probably the same part, since mitsubishi and dodge shared parts at the time.

oh, bump, I added the other two pics. I didn't happen to take any prior to the first one since I was so eager to get it done.
