  • *WORKLOG* 98 Maxima, 8'' Carputer Screen Project

    Sup Guys,

This project is for a member here RJ aka "Morpheus2010" on this forum, for his 98 maxima. Anyhow about a month ago we met through the forum, and have been discussing plans, he went ahead and ordered a 8 inch VGA touchscreen for his carputer. Today he was able to drop it off to me, 2 hour drive!, but hey, its hard to send things to someone you have never met before, so I surely understand.

Anyhow, RJ didn't want this to look OEM-ish, more of a exotic look, well thats is how it has to be anyways because the 8inch screen is too big for the double din opening to even mount flush. Even to attempt to get this to fit, I had to cut up the bezel. A 7inch would probably sit flush in the opening and look OEM, but again as stated above, this is not our aim, also Rj wanted the monitor to be tilted up, so that wasn't much of a problem. So I got to work and starting hacking, and hacking, and then I positioned my hacked up bezel and used tooth pics to get it in place, usually I use wooden dowels, but on this small scale project, toothpics were more nessecary.

After that I stretched my fleece and CA Glued the fleece to the plastic, this way there will be no seperation between the 2.

After that I resin-ed my fleece, it hardened in like 10 minutes, since I over hardened it on purpose.

Anyhow, here is some pictures, I usually don't like to post pictures in these early stages because everything is basically rough, and looks like crap, but it will look better after sanding.

One more point, it was nessecary to leave the single din opening on the bottom untouched, because a single din unit will be placed in this slot now,

First off keep up the good work and it was a 3 hr drive with my girl driving. This project is to prove to all those maxima.org guys who said I could not fit an 8" screen in my two dins. What I meant when we were talking was, to try as much as possible to flush the top part of the mold with the a/c and to shave down the bottom part a little so it does not block or over shadow my cd player.

here are two links to what my car looks like with auto a/c. The second link is the inspiration for my car since the day i bought it. He has a 7" in his.

The 7 in fits fine. When I had me Maxima, I epoxied the front of the screen bezel right to the cars bezel. Fit perfect, then mounted head unit under that. Screen glare was not that bad most of the time.

Anyway the 8" mount looks good!

Maybe it's an optical illusion, but it looks like your frame warped on you.
              Failure is not an option....

It's installed by default on every version of Windows.

That's some hardcore fabrication going on there. I once saw a maxima with a 10 but it got rid of the space beneath the double din of course. Looking at the way the 8" bezel was cut, it gave me an idea to flush mount the 8" bezel and angle mount the cd player face below that by extending the faceplate wires. Cause it looks like there is only 1/2 din left. At the angle you did the fab does the rest of the monitor still fit?

Would you post the sanding/finishing pics at some point? Am going to be trying to clean up a dash bezel I bought for an 8" 4:3 monitor, but am still trying to come up with the final finish. Will be interested to see how yours comes along, looks good so far

Is that the final stage? What paint is that? I'm planning to use regular flat black spray paint cause that seems to match the closest.

I actually used an array of paints from SEM, to get what I wanted, I first lay down a Satin Black, then I mist on SEM texture, a couple times, sand it down with my hands, you have to had used SEM texture before to know what i mean when I say that. Then I hit it up with a classy gray, since the a/c isn't exactly jet black, so I get the piece just a bit grayish and then hit up with some semi gloss clear coat, which deepins the color, color match isn't exact, but that is expected when painting with rattle cans, BTW the a/c controls are just for reference, Rj has A/t controls he will use to replace them.
