  • Mounting lcd screen OVER oem dash

I want to mount a touch screen monitor, dvd drive and small eeepc laptop into my dash. I see alot of posts on creating a bezel to fit inside a dash opening. Problem is, I own a 2008 mitsubishi lancer with integrated radio. It doesn't look like the manufacturer wanted me to take this stuff out, and I don't want to make it permanent because if I sell the car I'm taking this hardware with me. I'm looking into building a mount to cover the center front and top of my dash, where I could mount my lcd, dvd drive, laptop, and other hardware into this mount, but be able to remove the entire thing keeping the oem stuff intact. Seems difficult but i'm sure possible. I've figured that i could make a mold of my dash that would hang onto the stock radio via the indents (one very deep) built into it along with something temporary like velcro, then build my mount onto that, use body filler then paint it to look nice. My idea is very general and not sure about the best way to go about this. If anybody could help me i'd appreciate any ideas. I'll post picks of my dash if you want.

Your best bet is to just buy a replacement dash piece. Do all your fab on the spare dash piece and save the OEM one. Sell the car, just swap them back out.

If you try to make it overhang like that it will stick out like a sore thumb. It will look out of place.

If you still want to do it though, I would not use velcro.

Pics would help for sure. Also keep in mind, if you are planning on sticking things into deep pockets to keep it there, it wont look so nice when you remove it (scratches, warping, paint flaking).

Yep...just buy a spare and build your computer into the spare. Much less difficult than custom fabbing what sounds like essentially a new dash.

Buy the spare from a junkyard...if you go to Mitsu, they'll want some ridiculous amount of money for it.

ok i'll see if I can remove whats there, but I really don't think I'll find a 2008 lancer at the junkyard.

I bet you'd be surprised...the 2008 model has likely been out since mid 2007, right? That's four or five months for an accident to happen to an owner.

Would you have to have a 2008 dash piece? Or are previous models similar? Frequently interior plastic pieces from year to year do not vary much unless the entire interior is redesigned (I have no idea about the Lancer, obviously).

I am sure there are some junked 2008 for sure. Also ebay usually turns up some stuff.

As far as generations go for the lancer, it confuses me. It seems like they havent redesigned it since 2002, just adding small things. So the current "generation" of the lancer is 7th I think but it has had a few changes. I would start looking at pictures of 2007, 2006, 2005 models' dashes and see if they are matches.

They didn't make a 2007 and they completely redesigned the 2008 model from the 2006. Here's a picture of the stock radio.

Ah, so that is the discontinuity there. Seems odd, but ok.

Well then your best bet is to find an 08 in the scrap yard or ebay. And dont just check ebay.com, check ebay.ca, and other regions where the lancer is sold, and even under a different name.

I managed to remove the part of the dash that covers the stereo. I think I'm going to try and fiberglass a mold of the stereo cover and make a mount out of that. If that doesn't work out then on monday i will look around.

Have you tried searching for new replacement plastic panels? I bought a new replacement for my '08 Mustang from a Ford dealer for $40.

Good call...wouldn't have thought to do that myself.

So you're determined to do it the hard way, eh? ;-)

Good luck with the mold...hope it comes out well. Post back and let everyone know how it works out...
