  • 99 Mustang A/c Relocate

Would it be possible to relocate the a/c controls into the Saleen pod above the dash (that shows boost and intercooler temps)? I want to use the area that the a/c controls are in and I've already reserved both din slots for the screen. I'd like to put another VFD display there to show whatever info I want it to show (car performance, winamp info, volume, etc). Is there a way to do this? Looks like I could probably do it but I would have to stagger the knobs, so I might would have to use some knobs from a different automobile (or mount current ones behind a piece of billet aluminum). Does anyone know if this is possible to use a/c controls from a different automobile in my mustang? Thanks!!

last i looked at a mustang, i thought that those were cable operated controls(similar to the ford ranger i had--in fact, i though they used the same panel), so it is a slightly large undertaking--the wiring for the fan is easy, but, if it si a cable actuated heat/direction controls-- those can be tough. you migh need to extend the cables using something like bicycle brake wire/tubing...

though after looking at some of these threads, it seems that they might be vacuum/wire controlled, which just involves extending everything-- though not sure-- i am seeing conflicting posts on most of it(wheather the system is cable/wire or vacuum/wire)...

most of the threads don't detail much of the moveing proccess, but say that it is not a fun experience.

you could try to contact some of them, but most of the posts are back in 06-07, so it might be like trying to raise the dead...

Nah. I've been doing some reasearch (mainly looking at the various controllers to see how they work). I think it can be done. The most complicated part is finding something that will fit in the pod on top of the dash. It only holds 2 guages and isn't extremely large. It may take a lot of fabrication and reworking. Where there's a will there's a way though. :-)

it is defiantly do-able, just wasn't sure if you knew what you were getting into-- the cable actuated controls can be tough to work with because of they need the cables to be routed a specific direction..

overall, it looks like you will be one of the first to move the controls up there(most move them to teh glove box), so take lots of pics and walk the rest of us through it

Was just a thought. I'm sure though they're not cable actuated. They are definitely vacuum controlled (only the output position selector switch which is electrical and vacuum controlled switch). I was looking at the controls for the mercury cougar. May be easier to modify. I'll def take pics though if I wind up doing this. I just don't want to sink money into something that will be too difficult to accomplish. Also thought about moving them into the center console, but don't like the idea of making them any less accessible. I'll take pics when I get home. I know I don't want it computer controlled for my own reasons. I'm sure its doable. Just need to find the setup that works. I even considered rear a/c controls from a ford windstar. These def will fit then I only have to figure out how to manage the position output and such. Maybe find a smaller position switch and relocate it above? I'll post my plan as soon as I have it worked out.

I relocated the HVAC controls to the lower DIN position in my 2000 Mustang GT and used "mighty putty" to stick it in place (not the best solution, I know).
I didn't have to extend any of the cabling though.
