  • Mounting PC Internals

Hey guys... im going to make a custom enclosure for my desktop pc components... and was planning on atatching them all to a piece of mdf and then fastening that into a corner of my trunk standing on its side and putting a fiberglass wall up in front of it all

well my question is... what it the best way to mount the components to the mdf?

goto your local computer "salvage store" and buy some motherboard risers

my original idea was screws, but the threads on these screws are extrmely hard to match in order to buy longer ones to attach the parts to the board

It's easier to mount to a piece of plexiglass. Drill the little holes, and get some threaded motherboard risers. Screw those into your holes, and screw the mobo to that. 1/4in Plexiglass I think would be study enough, that's what I used for my first carpc.

For your HDD I'd recommend some of those 5 1/4 drive bay adapters for hard drives. Screw it to your board, then you have a 3.5" drive bay. For your power supply, maybe take the cover off, and screw it to your board, then screw the PS back to the cover. I've done that in a desk I used to turn into a computer-desk (gay pun, I know).

The thread for motherboard screws/risers and also the Opus 90w is 4-40, my local Lowes had a small bag of 14 machine bolts and nuts for a little less than a buck, the ones I bought were 1/2" long but I believe they have longer. I dunno about HDD screws though, I always seem to have some lying around.

Cool, what did you end up using for your hard drive?? Looks like a 3.5" bay rack from a tower...

How'd you mount your power supply?

yep 3.5" 30GB HDD (small i kno, but thats what was laying around)

mounted my power supply by drilling sum holes in the already existing casing and screwing it to the board

For drives you can actually use velcro on the side of the box walls. You can also use thin metal rails. I forget exactly what they are called but the have a sequence of hole on them. They look like metal pieces from an erector set.
