  • 1996 Ford Ranger - Photoshopped Image of touchscreen

Hi! I am a new member to this forum, and I have looked around a LOT on here. There is a wealth of information that has been highly useful so far. I love the fact that there are also a lot of nice pictures on here! I am EXTREMELY interested in installing a 7" Lilliput touchscreen in my '96 Ford Ranger. I would like to custom mount it into the double-din slot where my radio was. Look at the first image below to see what it looks like before the install. This picture is not current, as I have changed some of the Two-way radio's around, but basically the stereo is the same. I photoshopped a screen into the opening. Let me know what you think about how this looks.

ALSO: I was really curious about glare. Would glare be an issue at all? I will test this position out prior to starting the cutting, but I haven't purchased the screen yet.

As I do not have the screen yet, I do not know the answer to this, but can someone tell me whether or not there is anything else behind the circuit board for the buttons? The reason I ask this is because the spot where those buttons are is not too deep, and I need to make sure that they will fit. I do not want to relocate them.

What would be the best method of spraying to acheive this same texture on the bezel? I do not want to change the stock look, so any tips would be great! Thanks for sending ideas and thoughts! -BMW

i have that same exact dash and i was thinking of doing the same thing. My ranger is a 2001 though. anyways i have heard that when the screen is mounted in the dash with no angle there is rarely ever any glare because the sun comes in from the back the most, and isnt at a direct angle to you that way.
where is it that you are gonna put your motherboard and setup, because im having trouble finding a good place. also are you gonna hack the buttons off of the bottom of the lilluput so they will fit in the dash right, or are you gonna make them come out of that bottom divider?

Thanks for the replies. I ALMOST decided not to post that picture because of those legs in there, but i figured that after all that photoshopping it wouldn't matter. It is an older picture too that I used. I have a few additional radios at the moment.

I am still thinking about the mounting locations of the PC. I have not checked into this yet, but maybe under the passenger's seat. If not, I will go ahead and mount it behind the passenger's side rear jump-seat (I have the extended cab). I also may simply mount it to the floor directly below where the jump seat would be when it's pulled out. This way it's not in the way of being kicked, but the seat still works ok. I have several radio units and strobe power supplies tucked away behind the jump seats in both sides, so I will need to move it all around and figure out what works best.

As far as the buttons. I have not quite looked into that completely yet to know what my options are. I do not know if I can even manage to squeeze the buttons where that devider piece was, but I'd like to. I want to keep the buttons, so I will figure out how to do it at some point. If it comes down to it, I will mold the buttons right below the heater and AC controls in that little area. I want it all to look high quality and stock - but i need to research how these will fit before I decide. Also, I plan to cut into the devider that is between the stereo and the vents and move the display up about a quarter of an inch. This may provide a little bit more room.

If anyone has picutres of a Ranger or Explorer install with this console and a littliput molded into it, please post them. I have seen one on here, but I didn't like it too much. Thanks! -Brett W

I have a 7" LCD mount exactly like your trying to do. It was a lot of work building the supports on the back to fit the display tight to the bezel, and I also had to mold the sides of the DIN opening in towards the center a bit as the display wasn't quite as wide as the 2DIN opening. I built button extensions that protrude just slightly through the plastic piece of the bezel between the HVAC controls and the DIN opening. I've very pleased with the way it turned out.

I don't have a many good pictures of it right now, but you can see a few of them, and other pics of my truck at my website: www.pepesranger.com

He added that himself. Those aren't stock in Rangers. I added one to mine too (but w/out the LCD he molded into it). You can get them from Explorer's. Go to a junk yard and if your lucky they will have some there... I got mine for like $15.

Hi Pepe. I did see your truck online here. That install of the screen is very similar to what I will be doing, but I am going to try and add a little more contour to it. Yours looks nice how its set up, but I will be painting mine black again like it is. With this color, I think it needs a bit more contour to it then yours does (around the LCD edges etc). I do not want to bondo it flat all the way up to the LCD. That's all in my artwork though - I can do it (i think! )! I have been thinking over whether I want the 7" Lilliput Touchscreen, or the 8"... I just won the auction for a NEW 7" VGA TFT Touchscreen monitor on eBay for $238.50 plus $20 shipping (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=7929205651). I can't wait to get it now so I can start playing!

yeah i went to the local junkyard looking for that and for a radio bezel, but where i live everything good is pillaged so fast that there arent even cars that are newer than 98 that stay there for more than a day or two but im gonna but the stuff off of ebay now. Was that overhead unit hard to install though?

It wasn't hard but it was time consuming. You have to cut in your headliner and you also have to cut through some steal for the brackets. Very scary but worth it!!

HELP! I bought that LCD in the link above, but I just received an email from ebay that read:

Dear Brett * ******* ([email protected]),

                            The following listing:

7929205651 - New Lilliput NW619VT 7" VGA TFT Touch Screen Monitor

was removed by eBay because a Verified Right Owner (VeRO) Program participant notified eBay that the listing potentially infringes its trademark. We strongly urge you not to complete this transaction.

You can get more information on the VeRO Program at:

                            http://pages.ebay.com/help/confidenc...s-vero-ov.html

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding in this issue.

The link now says INVALID ITEM and it doesnt show up in my eBay Won Items area... Any ideas? I cancelled the PayPal Payment that I sent, so I am safe there. I was excited too! If you have any ideas what may have caused this, please let me know. Thanks! -Brett
