  • Slim vents - need ideas!

Hi guys and gals, need to pick your brains.

I am looking for some slim car vents or something i could use instead of car vents. the reason is i want to replace my existing large dash vents (see pic) with some smaller ones to help make room for the screen (every inch helps). The exisitng vents are about 4 inch wide at the bottom and 3 inch tall with the left one being much narrower at the top and i would like to be able to angle them (not bothered baout closing em as i dotn think have ever closed a vent in my life - just use the air route dial).

Please post pics and car if you can hink of any

    Cheers

    Andy

Cheers Andy, the trick is to get some vents, mod them, and then fit the duct in them. Anyway, a bit of a extreme solution.. You should be fine without them. Redirect the heat towards the front window... In my car I don't use the vents at all, all the air circules from the front window. Anyway, post a pic with a wider angle, maybe we can work something out...

hey Cris, might have know you would be the 1st to reply! hehe

I was thinking about getting some vents and trying to hack them down but i might just replace them with slits so i get a bit of air. I do tend to use the widscreen/footwell mix more these days but for some reason just cannot remoe the middle vents all together - it just seems wrong. I have been tempted but not gonna do it! I think maybe some slits with small vanes might do the trick and set them (with trial and error) to point at the right attitiude to get occupants faces.

Answering my own thread a bit but just came across Leventechnology.co.uk who make some dash vents which are no good but they do have some very nice alloy window switches which may come in useful for someone as volume/track dash buttons - not cheap though. Will have to pop over to the locost build forum and ask if anyone over there knows some suppliers.

Cris, will get a better pic up tomorrow. Have the centre dash part coming off a ebay this week (yaaaaaay!!!!) so will see if the guy has the vents too.

Hey, Andy, just got an ideea. I was phoshopping your pic, when I got a great ideea. You know that a litlle older BMW's have the vents on the dash facing up, not like yours facing the driver. How about that? Could it work?

you mean out the top of the dash??? I thought of that but really dont want to cut the dash surround as i will probably end up givig this car to my sister (like my last one) in a year or so.Mind you a few holes aint gonna make any difference to her - the last car i gave her got drawn on with a stone over every single body panel after 2 weeks! And i had looked after that car so well while i was at uni. Got any pics of the Bimmer idea?

first photo is horrible black plastic dash! (looks better in real life, i promise)
second photo shows intended design but thats gonna be too tight i think.

It's closing time for me...find some pics of bmw vents, and will PS them. I think it would look smashing... Why not cut the dash? I don't think you sister will mind the top front vent...

you could fiberglass some thin vents. from the look of that pic, the vents are their own panel so you could take it off and mod it pretty easy.

Yeah the panel is separate but quite deep. I might make some slit type vents at the top - possibly with a gimbal action or moving vanes. Might even pull the dash forward due to the complexities of the dash behind the fascia and I sit quite far back and cant actually reach the radio very easily!!

Cris, where in the UK are you?

There should be enough room for the LCD and the Vents u might have to take the buttons off the LCD but thats ok u can use the Remote or move them to somewere else?

Yeah that was my plan until i took the dash apart - the mounting behind is very gay and the aircon controls use cables and are huge. If you look at my 3rd pic above (pug PC) this is what i had planned before i investigated. Looks like I am just gonna have to really hack my dash - oh well! cheers for taking the time to mod my pic though. I really want a slot load DVD below the screen as well. Waiting for someone to take the LinITX screen apart as i hope this will save me some room. I was also tempted to use the 8" sbut i think that will be excessive. Will post pics with the dimensions - it is pretty toight!!!!

hmm why not remove the vents put the LCD there where u want it then where that digital clock is you could put the vents down there just hook a tube into the shaft and block off the top and leave a little hole to cool the LCD while in use

This was u can put your LCD in the dash and have the vents 2

Nice ideea, but I think it would be phisically imosible. The tubes are quite big, and I don't think you have room under the dash to add another tubes... But very ingenious ideea...

I was thinking the same - those ducts are right at the back and huge. Guess i am back to my orginal layout but with some major hacking off the original dash mounting points - oh well!

I would like to recess the screen a bit to help with glare and the face of the dash actually slopes towards the driver which should help with glare. I am itching to get my hands on a screen and start - thats all i am waiting for now but i am waiting for someone to post the 1st internal pics of the linITX one and i am a bit worried about the lack of auto-on but this can easily be solved i suspect. I am thinking that a complete 1 piece centre part will best with some smaller vents moulded in the top.

As for cooling the screen - i live in the UK and i will be tinting the windows a little so heat aint really an issue.

Cheers for the interest and suggestions guys - they are helping even though i don't sound very optimistic. I have a complete centre part coming soon so i can see if i can trim down and relocate that damn heater control. I am determined to make this look stock but be strong as i dont want it getting pinched - I had a cool idea for a fake fascia - make something that looks like a face-off stereo with the face removed to fit into the recessed screen area - ie black plastic with a few clips and connectors on it.

UK_MP3car is also doing a 306 but i think he is planning on putting his screen low down but i think it is best to have your sat nav high and my stereo is crap (no aux inputs) so it will be going.

I'm still deciding what to do! Half wondering whether to lose the vents and HU and wire direct to my amp in the back - was concerned a bit about security but then again I am planning on tinting the windows so it shouldn't be possible to see the tft.

The thing I'm dreading is the actual fabrication itself as I hate doing that sort of thing - can see it being very messy!
