  • The Beginnings: RSX Carputer

I finally got off my butt to try the epoxy/kitty hair/plastic body filler/finishing putty/primer/paint. Well and i finally finished the dash piece for the touchscreen. Im planning to use a lilliput. I used the old 6disc cd changer faceplate to create the bracket that would hold my screen.

    and on to the pictures....

Thats a big tub of cashews!

Nice part - how does the texture match up with your original dash parts? Could you list the paints you used? Shoudl help other people. Good luck with the rest of it.

Yea, they are the same, the first 2 pics are just of the kitty hair.. kinda sanded but not really. Last two are the finished product after using all the goodies to make it smooth.

the texture is pretty close look wise, but it definately feels bumpier than the factory dash part. The piece is also just a tad darker than the original. But all in all they look like they match.

I ended up using plastikote filler primer (black). this filled up any small nicks or anything i missed with the putty. as well as prepping the surface for paint. Then for paint i used plastikote trim black. which is supposedly used to give you that textured black.

id say its not bad for a first try =) i never worked with any sort of filler before. and i think that yoru final product is based on how well you sand the thing.

Nice job, and isn't Costco so cool, especially at weekends, when you can walk round all day, eat all the samples, then go buy a jumbo slice of Pizza to keep you going until you get to the car.

thats looks great man. I love how the texture isnt smooth per say cause most factory dashes, or if you buy an aftermarket kit to hold a cdplayer or something, usually look just like yours does.

BTW, where do you buy the plastikote?

To get membership, you need to either run a business, work for a business with membership, or work for a large company that gives out staff cards.

Only costs a few quid a year for the Missus (gets membership because she works at Transco) and I get a free Spouse card.

As long as you only go when you need something, then it's great. Things like Chevron full synth 5w40 oil, 9 for 4 litres. Industrial size drums of dino oil, and anti freeze too, plus a few computer bits and loads of digital cameras and stuff, even an optician. You can even get Micheline tyres for a decent price.

Yep, and I'm lucky to have 2 with 20 miles, and membership.

Nothing better on a Saturday afternoon to go load up the car with oversized packets of everything you could possibly want (seems so much better shopping when the packets are so large).

My boss goes down there regular and picks up 80-120litres of diet coke. He really is adicted.

i got some at my local pepboys (an auto supply store for those who dont know what it is)

i think if i would have wet sanded the paint a bit, and then applied a final coat, it probably would have been pretty smooth. though it may have a similar texture to the aftermarket dash kits, it doesnt look even as near as cheap as some of them do

as for costco, anyone can be a member as long as you pay the fee. theres a special "executive member" you can get if you pay more and have a business. This allows you to go there during special times in the morning before it opens to regular customers. I went there one time with my mother (shes an executive card member) and they serve you free pastries and coffee/juice. but i havent been there for awhile that early, so i dont know if they still do that.
