  • screen in my mini

just started to make a bezel for my mini, im movin the heater controls down, and puttin the screen where the hu/heaters were.

its a 7" vga toucscreen, and will be on show all the time.

    Pics here

im also gonna try to put a slot loading dvd drive in underneath the screen.
im gonna power the screen off an itps, and i will use the power on pulse to powe r on the screen, so i wont need the buttons. (i hope) but ill solder a ir eye in my bezel just in case i need to control the screen.

what do i paint it with? i was gonna just prime loads, and then spray like 4 times
    then laqure. should look ok?

    thanks,
    tom.

How did do all that work? Looks like it was done at a professional woodworking shop. Did you use a router for all the detail? How did you get the perfect rounded corners? Thanks.

well i cut the hole with a router first,
then i moved the guides out, to create a rebate.
this left me with a rebate with rounded corners and a hole with rounded corners, (because the router cuts like that.)
so i grabbed a chisel and squared off the corners to alow the screen to fit. i was gonna do that with the hole too, but i figure it looks good with round corners.

next i rebated the front (to alow it to go into my cars dash) and then cut it using a table saw, and a crosscut. (if your doing it like this, cutting thin pieces, or rebated, mine was like 4mm away from the top of the rebate, and the rebate is around 1mm thick, if your doing somethin similar, make sure to fix to a piece of scrap wood, to keep everything together, will give cleaner cuts and stop the saw blade from messing up the thin edges)

then i just grabbed some sand paper, and i feathered off the edge around the hole, so that when the screen is in, it meets the screen at a point. this makes it all very delicate, but once the screen is in it should be fine.

im a joiner so i was a professional shop

Yeah I'm hoping to do away with the screen bezel and fabbing into the dash, difficulty is that the dash curves up and away from the screen so have to do a hell of a lot of filling and its knowing what to fill it will - am wondering whether its simpler to sell the car and change to somethign easier!!!!

I had the same idea! YOu can't even use a motorised screen as the dash slopes at the top.
