  • 3d Render of Custom Dash

I hope this is in the right section. I had the idea of trying to control the climate and everything through my computer, as others on this site have so I wanted to redo my dash and get rid of relatively all the buttons, I may leave a few like the hazards and other things that would just be easier left alone. Anyway, here's what I have so far, I'm not the best modeller so it's no work of art, but let me know what you think of it so far.

There will also be a dvd rom in the dash right below the screen in that curved lighter area.

I think it's gonna be a fun experience in fiberglass. Are you using 3dstudiomax?

If you're getting rid of most of the factory dash buttons you should probably have room for a 8" Xenarc. What screen were you planning on using?

Yeah, 3d studio max. And, yeah, a lot of fiberglassing work. I don't expect this project to be done anytime soon unfortunately, due to lack of funds, time and equipment, but it's fun to play around with ideas.

I have a 7" lilliput right now, i guess i could go for a 8 inch or 10 inch if possible; that would make it a bit easier to use I suppose.

I've been thinking about doing the same thing with mine. I've got a 2000 ford explorer eddie bauer edition. Is there already a thread somewhere that someone has gone through step-by-step to explain exactly how to go about doing all of this and setting everything up? And I also have the default steering wheel controls for climate/radio and was wondering if i'd be able to hook that up as well. Any help/tips/advice you guys have would be greatly appreciated.

be careful using that because i bet your not modeling to scale

take a picture of the dash's profille and top and set those on the camera's image planes so you can get closer to the correct dimension.

                  Keep up the good work

Yeah, I need to work on the armwrest part because I know that part isn't to scale, but the front part is exactly to scale because I made a little picture of how I wanted it to look and then traced it with a line in 3d max to match the right size. Here's the picture of what I want the dash to look like in the end...

My drawing skills are even worse, lol, so enjoy.

About the digitalizing the climate controls, I was just planning on taking apart the dash and using phidgets to do it like servos to turn the controls and I'm a computer science major and know C++ like the back of my hand so it shouldn't be much of a problem coming up with a program to control the servos. If it is I could always use visual basic which is supposed to be really easy with phidgets and seems to be the most popular language in terms of car media software for whatever reason. Anyway, I know it won't be easy but hopefully one day my dash will look somewhat like that and be digitalized.
