  • Plaster?

    Hi,

    where You guys have bought plaster that You've been using in making the moulds?

    The idea is to make small carbon fiber parts.

    ps.

    I tried to search...

      Yes, You most definitely are lost somewhere in space

      So anyhow, smart alec, the idea is to make exact moulds of given parts and then use these molds to create cf parts to replace the original ones.

      So if someone can answer a simple question, please do so.

        OK... I'll bite... but need more info... do you have a part that you are ready to make a mould from and then make parts? Or do you want to make a mould of a stock part, make a replica, modify that and then make more parts...

        If you have a part you want to make copies of out of fiberglass or carbon fiber... you are going to first want to take a mould off of the original. There are many many steps that you want to take to do so... but before going into it, maybe you should give more info... I'll check back later!

          I do have the part already. I.e. it is a stock/original part that I do want to make exact copies of by using plaster as making the mould.

            you cannot use plaster to make the mold, you will want to use fiberglass to make a mold. you use a mold release wax, and then lay down your fiberglass. ddepending on the shape, you may have to create different kinds of molds (one part, two part, etc). then once you have your mold, to create the part, its almost the same idea. release wax, lay down fiberglass layers,"green" stage (precure) - cut any excess off areas, cure, and pull the part.

              I guess I'll answer to myself then. I guess ultracal 30 is the stuff I need to get?

              Why is it that I couldn't use plaster as a mould? I found this site and at least JL Audio is using plaster?

                Yeah, thats pretty much what i said...

                it really depends what part you are trying to fabricate.
                But since you dont want to be upfront and clear with what the hell youre trying to make, and youve found your PDF, and answered yourself, go to town with that.

                  I do know that usually the mould is being made out of FG but I'd like to go the easy route and use plaster to do that. So I was just wondering has anyone used that stuff?

                  I really can't understand what difference does it make what the parts are? How much different is the process of making a mould is (as I am not making a part which requires multiple pieces) But anyhow, the parts are relatively small pieces of center console. Sides of that to be more specific.

                  So the question is, can I use plaster to make molds of the original pieces or not? If I didn't understand totally incorrectly, I would be able to do that on the basis of the link that I provided as it doesn't matter is the part self-made or an OG one, does it?

                  so You are saying that the mould needs to be done out of FG and plaster can not be used? In the link for example the plaster mould was reinforced by using hemp and FG could have been used. - is that the big difference were debating

                    It seems like you know more about using plaster to make a mold than anyone else here does. If you want to use plaster go ahead and try it. Its cheap enough. The difference will be in the quality of the surface you'll have to apply your release wax to. If its soft and porous maybe it won't be ideal. Then of course maybe you can gelcoat your plug before you add plaster. Silicone works well too I'd try that if I wanted to do something like you are describing, but its expensive.

                      Start by coating your part with mould release wax or HPV (can't remember what it stands for... basically it is liquid vinyl)... once you have your mould release taken care of, coat the part with tooling gel (gel coat)... usually tooling gel is bright orange... the gel coat will pick up your finish texture... if you have a paint-ready final part, your parts should come out of the mould being paint-ready... once the gell coat is cured, lay-up one coat of fiberglass and polyseter lay-up resin... let it cure and then lay up 2-3 more layers of the same. Now like someone already said, you may need a multi-part mould.. this is if your part has compound contours with negative draft... we can talk more about that later... mulit-piece moulds will be tough and not really for a first attempt... but who knows... we don't know your abilities... then again, with your questions, neither do you (not a slam)... sooo... I'll check back after work... have a wonderful day!

                        thanks for a prompt reply.

                        I'll let You guys know how it goes. I picked up some plaster today and I'll start working on the mold tomorrow.

                        The parts that I am facricating do not require multiple molds - I picked the easy parts first to get things rolling....one has to be able to crawl before running as the saying goes
