    UPDATE--- Finished pic:

I know you e46 guys will say there isnt enough room, but I managed to make it work.

The trick is that I had to recess the screen about an inch and a half(which also blocks sunlight) and then the unused part of the TFT screen can actually be placed below the dash line, and then there is the EXACT amount of room above it to fit the dvd-rom drive...

As you can see I started with a din adapter from cardomain.com, so that I didnt have to make my own mounts... I also had to significantly chop the plastic peice that is behind the dash (which is a $25 dollar part to replace, no biggie) this peice is completely removeable, you just gotta YANK on the vents to free it.

Here is some pictures of the work so far, this is after the follwoing steps...

    1. Chop plastics of Xenarc frame and removable dash peice
    2. epoxy them together in the right place, checking fitment all along.
    3. build a wood frame to recess the screen(then check fitment)
    4. bondo the smaller gaps and uneven surfaces(once again, check fitment)
    5. ruff sand...

    Things yet to do...
    6 more filler and sanding
    7 priming and painting
    8 mounting

Looks very nice; another unique approach to the e46's opening! I am glad to see that someone managed to fit a cdrom in there too; it will be interesting to see the finished product.

Keep sanding that down until it's smooth as glass. Hit it with a light coat of primer and you'll soon notice if there are any slight blemishes. Looks like it's coming along great otherwise!

        UPDATE:

I did 2 more rounds of filler, and then sprayed a coat of primer(this really finds all the imperfections!) I am going to do another round of filler/sanding, and then more primer... more pics coming tonight!

Are you going with slot load DVD, or a tray load? I think I may still be able to fit on in mine if I use a slot load.

Also, so are you just using wood and bondo? How easy is it to work with bondo? I've got some but haven't tried it yet. The Duramix 4040 and 4058 is easy to use, but it sets in 50 seconds so it can be a pain to work with (not to mention it's not very cheap)

I am using a slot load drive, the whole drive fits, but the trim peice is really tight on the top of it, and a tray drive would get hung up... I actaully have the lcd panel almost 1/4 inch below the front lip of the bezel, but you cant really tell, once its in, because its recessed about an inch or so(as you can see)

I actaully used some plastic from an old guitar case to fill in the spots that would need to be stronger than bondo/wood. All of this was epoxied, and bodo was really only used to level out different plains, and flatten/smooth surfaces.

I used 2 types of bondo, auto body filler, and spot putty. I used the auto body filler to fill in the gaps on the sides of the opening, and the spot putty worked much better to shape and smooth it out.

The bondo took a bit to get used to, because it dries in like 2 minutes, so I found it better to plan out the spot I was going to bondo, then mix just the amount I needed for that spot, and fill it, them move on...

Right now the bezel is smooth as glass, and primed and ready to go, but I cant find SEM paints anywhere! anyone know where I could fine it? I checked autozone and andvance auto parts, and even pep boys.

I had to get very creative to make it fit... everything is a tight of a fit as possible, not 1mm to spare... I was going to put the slot drive behind the bezel and just have a slot opening, but this seemed to be easier... I may still do the first option(it will look cleaner)

right now I just really need the SEM paint... anyone have any tips on where to find it? I searched the forums already... and pep boys was all I found, and I tried that, they didnt have it...

Go to a bumper shop. They will have it for sure. I don't know where you are located but Amarillo only has about 200K people and we have a number of huge (warehouse size) places that do nothing but bumpers.

Also don't forget that (at least in my case) the SEM did not have the right lustre or finish by itself... I had to finish up with about 4 coats of Krylon Ultra Flat Black to make it look stock.

UPDATE: PICS: Final e46 Xenarc - DVD Fab

Sorry for the low rez camera phone pics, its all I have right now...

the bezel is perfect, better than I could ever imagine, it looks so factory nobody beleives me that I made it... It was worth the extra 10 hours of sanding and smoothing that it took to perfect it...

having it recessed an inch or so is great, I can see it at any time of day... the dvd/cdrw drive is hooked up with an active USB 16ft extension cablle, works great! I ran a molex connector from the PC to power the xenarc with 12v and the dvd with 5v, it also makes for easy removal.

Those pictures were taken in full morning sunlight, so you can see how having it recessed really helped, its totally readable in 95% of conditions (if I have my sunroof open and I drive east in the evening it gets some sunlight)

hot damn that looks awesome. If I were going in-dash, I'd be looking to do the same thing. Something to consider I guess. How long total did the fabrication take?

total was about 20 hours, between about 5 days (3-4 hours a day) over about a 3 week period(only had time on weekends).

I have never fabricated anything before in my life, and I am not ussually very patient with things... so I probably wasted a few hours(sanded bondo or primer before it was dry, or didnt wait long enought for epoxy to dry, and had to do it over)

The thing that helped the most was the plastic from the guitar case, its about 1/16 of an inch think, and if you bend it, it kinda stays that way, so I was able to trim and cut the bulk of the face of the unit out of that stuff, and epoxy it in place, I really only used bondo to smooth it out, and round the corners and level the surfaces... the rest was plastic and epoxy... the DIN adapter really helped too, cause i didnt have to make any mounts, and it pretty much gave me the perfect spacing and angles for the curves for the top half of the unit, the bottom half is all fabricated with plastic... wood was only used to make the frame between the 2 frames(the recessed part).
