  • 100% ABS LCD install with texture

Figured i'd post this here to help anyone interested in molding their LCD into their dash using only ABS plastic, since it won't crack due to temperature variations, and different expansion of dissimilar materials (ex: bondo over ABS, etc.)

First, I bought some 12"x12" ABS sheets from Mcmaster.com:

then I cut a sheet so it fits in the dash:

Then ripped apart my Lilliput 8", and cut off the lower part with buttons using a jigsaw:

Then sanded the paint off the Lilliput bezel to get my ABS goo
which i'm using to weld all my ABS pieces together.

Then I glued the Lilliput bezel to the ABS plate after cutting out a spot for it:

    Backside (detail of ABS goo):

Then I sprayed it with Duplicolor's Adhesion Promoter for plastics (available at auto parts stores), then a light coat of SEM texture spray to get a pebble grained texture:

Then another coat of adhesion promoter, and two coats of Duplicolor Bumper Coating (black):

The other piece is a trim piece i built up using ABS plastic strips, and sanded to shape. Here are several pics during it's build:

And finally the whole assembly installed:

Go to http://www.mcmaster.com/ and in the search box, type in "ABS sheets", or the part #. They carry several thicknesses and sizes. I think the part # is 8586K162. I bought two 12" x 12" 1/8" thick sheets. After shipping to FL it cost me $17.

I too would like to thank you for the ABS supplier hook up. Good stuff, and I like the install. Looks really clean. This ABS "goo" you are talking about.... Is that a product or are you using ABS glue or some sort of putty ABS mix combo to make a "goo"?
                  Bob. Yes, that's me.

Awesome work, and thanks for the pics & write-up! That is a huge opening, it must be a 2.5 DIN, right??? I have double din, or maybe it is just 1.5... I am not sure after seeing that! I am looking to use this method on my lilli in-dash install, but am hung up on the fitting of it.... don't have as much room to work with as you did...
I am curious about the trim piece you made the overhang on... Was that the factory trim?

You can get ABS cheaper at cardomain.com --> http://www.cardomain.com/shoplist~t~Laminates . Less than $4 for a sheet of 12x12" 1/8" thick ABS. They also have 3/16" fyi.
