  • MB W210 with Xenarc 8'' Install

    Hi!

This is my first post. In here I'll describe step-by-step my job on installing a carpc on a 1996 Mercedes Benz E200 (w210 chassis).

It took me a while to get the necessary balls to do the job.

The amazing fabrications I see on other treads here at Mp3Car made my mind.

Thanks to all of you for all information you share here.

Right now I'm changing lights to blue smd's... The aircon display is giving me a headache...

    I'll post 1st pictures tomorrow...

edit: Just been on the phone with my brother-in-law. He's a painter and will start to search his supplyers for PU primer, paint and coat. I want the final job to look like a piano: Shinny black !

    Here are the 1st pics:
My center pannel as it is now (was not like this ). The aircon controler was on top followed by the 1DIN Car radio (Grundig WKC5300). On the bottom part was a 1DIN size cabinet with a flap door. ALL removed as you can see...

Doing the curve from the gear stick up to the center pannel is a ash tray but I think it will not fit now.

Now for the fabrication of a new bezel... I can't wait to see it finish but I know that I need to be patient in order to achieve good results.

As you can see for an experince guy doing fabrication mine should be easy.
But this is my 1st time doing this so I have some questions I hope you can help me answer:

Final look should be like a piano: black with a shinny coat.

    1. Should I fiberglass > bondo > primer > Paint > coat (with all necessary sand)
1.1 If so how ? With the polyester T-shirt technique on the front ? Just embed the wood with the resin ?
Fiberglass from behind with the stuff that comes with the resin ?

My graetest concern is that I'm using 3 diferent materials: wood, Aliminium and plastic. I don't know how will the fiberglass behave with this...

    Please help me

Parts lits from Robialac Auto Paint department:

      primer hardner - 662-69
      primer - 334-007

      Black gloss - 471-3

      Acrylic PU coat - 125-0011
      PU hardner - 675-46

      Paint thiner - 625-0016
      PU Coat thiner - 625-0002

1 Liter for the entire job (I'll do also the door trims and the big center trim on the dashboard). 1/2 would be enough but 1L is the smallest unit they sell. My brother in law will do the paint job. The parts will cost me 130€ !!!

I think is too much but the guy said this will be as hard as a rock. The final look should be like the gear-stick knob (pic without the scratches ).

          Days 2,3

Yesterday after work I glued all parts together with 2 components epoxy.

Today when I came back from work the all thing didn't inspire much "solidness".
I screwed all parts, later the screw heads will be covered. What do you think ? Did I do it right or I shouldn't have screwed the parts ?

Now for the next step: bondo or fiberglass ? I choice #2 how ? Need help on this... remember I will have this baby coated with polyurethane paint and clear coat. $$$ can´t waist much on trials...

See the scrahed line on the ash tray cover ? I'll have to cut it out ... otherwise it won't fit !

            No help ????

ok, it seems I'll be the only one posting on this thread... never mind...

I just put some bondo on the gaps, then applied the fiber glass resin with the hardener over the plywood.

I removed all seats so I could pass power cables through left side and USB/VGA cables through the other side. Used the occasion to upgrade speakers cable and route them to the rear.

            during install:...

              Beta 1

Here is Release Candidate. The paint job is not final. I just did it so the pinkish from the bondo doesn't irritate me until I can do the final paint job. There are still a few spots that need more bondo and sanding. The small hole is for the IR for the screen but I don't think I'll use it !

The flap door on the bottom will also be painted black as will the one with the electric windows switches.

I'm still undecided on the dash trim: also black or leave it as it is

You made that look really easy. That turned out really nice and I love your idea of the piano finish.

                        Hi!
I suppose that by now you have already taken out your centre console. If not then you have to remove the bottom board (where you have the window buttons) just pull it up as it is held in place with springs. Then you will see two screws to remove the ash tray: pull it towards you after removing the 2 screws. I donít remember the rest of the way but I do remember that you have 2 more screws behind the ac controller or the car radio. Just remove both and take a look. I had a video on that but just can't recall where the hell ALL the videos are...

                        Hope it helps.

Thank you all for your kind words on my install.

Unfortunatly it cracked a bit. I allready ordered a used dash in ebay (so i can make a new one while using the cracked one).

This time I think I'll use a 6.5 screen. I got my hands on a screen from Sharp that's used in automotive applications
I'm just figuring out the pinout on this thing. It has built in TS controller and BL inverter

I'll let you know how it goes.

                              Great link Holern !
