  • How-to: Motorized, retractable LCD

Hey guys, copied a lot of this from my worklog - but thought it might help a few people building something similar.

So I will be updating this shortly with the motorization portion. Up to know you can enjoy the build of the base.

The cars stock interior (borrowed internet image)

Now, the radio bezel was altered similar to how you mould in a normal LCD bezel.

    Step 1.
Remove your radio bezel, and determine the space you have available. You may have to be willing to cut away the stock supports like this.

    http://www.supermotors.net/vehicles/...y/media/434628

If you make clean cuts, it should be quite possible to return to the stock setup should you wish to sell the car. If you have a double DIN opening it would be very possible to modify this to fit (possibly without the front cover)

    Step 2.
Cut the opening in the stock radio bezel (or use the double din opening if you have one).

    Step 3.
Create an ~1" wide frame, with a front lip equal to the thickness of the material you are using. I can't seem to find the pictures I took of this, but will update it when I find them. Here is a rough schematic.
    http://www.supermotors.net/vehicles/...y/media/434698

Essentially you want to make 2 parts, a basic square frame, and a front that overlaps the inside of the frame by the thickness of the material. This outer frame will eventually surround the inner frame that holds the LCD. Again pictures will help a lot..lol. The frame will provide support for the final installation, and helps align the whole project. It also is the inner walls of the molded in part. This means you can have perfect straight lines along the opening.

Once you have the frame, place the cut radio bezel into its proper location in your car. Then fix the frame in the opening from Step 2 at the angle and position you like. Mould the frame in using ABS sludge.

    Backside

    Step 4. Sand, sand, sand,

Then after several thin layers of ABS sludge, a light coat of bondo, more sanding you get something like this.

    After Primer.

    Step 5:

Next I made a cover out of acrylic, then laser etched and sandblasted a logo onto the cover. I will be replacing the cover with a new one once I finalize paint. It will perfectly match the rest of the bezel. The cover is not motorized but travels along two tracks. Details to follow.

    Door closed

    Stock Push Button Control

Now for the fun part, with the push of an originally factory switch for the headlights. You get motorized lcd to fold down to a preset position. The position has preset travel limits with the button, however there is a secondary control so I can angle the LCD at any angle along its travel to minimize sun reflection.

And Voila! My hidden A/C controls. Could easily be modified for a DVD, etc.

So I know there will be a lot of questions concerning how the LCD was motorized, but I will reserve a space to follow up on this in a future post. Also I will continue to fill in the details of the LCD housing as well.

Needless to say, be patient it is a very simple, and cheap (~60 bucks if you have access to materials, equipment) design that took a lot of redesigning and several prototypes to make work. Motorization and cheap are 2 words usually not meant to go in one sentence. Your comments, questions, advice are welcomed.

Finishing the write ups will take a couple of days. Work is killing me.

As to the car, Dude you drive an automatic Honda Accord! To each their own man, but the Ford Probe is great platform, and not everyone and their Mom's have one.

Its true man, Ford definently could work on the names of its car. Then again, pretty easy to make fun of car names...like the "bore-olla" or the "poor-olla"

Anyways, lets get this back on topic. If there is no interest in the write up, its cool I won't waste our time by doing it.

what's up with all these noobs giving you smack about your probe. funny thing is, the can't even figure out how to configure their mp3car profile to display their newer car that's a POS and most likely 4 door and slower than ur Probe

                          rofl...

Can't wait to see the writeup bro, good work, looks great

edit; as a side note, wtf happened to it showing ppl's cars? Mine are missing, and it looks like everyone else's is gone, bah
