  • Making A door

Here's my progress so far with the fabrication...

    www.angelfire.com/ny5/ofpureblood/mustang

I took out the dash bezel cut it up in the back abit so the screen would fit ok, right now its held in just by pressue from the radio behind it and the plastic dash piece in front. I'm planning on extending the top and the two sides of the plastic about 2inches or so in hopes that it will provide some coverage from the sun so I won't get to much washout. My question is does anyone know how/where I can get some kind of door to cover the screen when not in use...im not in the greatest neighborhood so if it's covered less likely to be stolen.

Anyone with ideas suggestions or anything at all im completely open to anything...thanks!

This is what I did man.

The cover is manually operated for now. Another idea might just be to make a fake cover from the front of a stock radio. Hold the cover in with magnets when you park.

Scion tC is what Scott means. The door SUCKS. When I was installing sat radio in my girlfriend's the stupid spring popped off no less than 3 times.

I think Yev's workin on building some sort of roll-up door.

well that probe is quite the installation but i have the same problem with that as i do with stealing a z's door and using that...i dont have the space behind it to have room for a door to slide behind it...

you could always hack off an oem headunit bezel and fab a removable cover to cover up your screen. another thing you could do is make a blank plate to cover it up. i guess you could try to make some sort of shade that could unroll to cover things up. maybe you could use some nytinol (sp?) to automate it.

when i first saw the title i thought you were making half doors for something... ( i need to stay away from the off road forums for a little while...)

anyway, the great thing about a door that doesnt go into the dash all the way, is that it provides a sunshade for your screen, we all know how ****ty they look in the sun, unless you have a trans like scott above me... lucky

                how much is a trans?

well i was thinking of using the two extensions on the side to form some kind of door that would fold over it but i duno how i could do it cuz theres no place to slide them into the dash to make them smaller and if i make them big enough to cover the whole screen they will be huge sticking out of the dash.

I thought of the magnet idea and put my old radio bezel over it but wont the magnets fuk **** up.

If you don't have room for the door in the dash..I would say go with the "faux" front approach. If done right can look great.

Another option would be to put slides on the side of the screen and have a door that splits in the middle (or multiple times) and you could lift it up. Imagine a sliding closet door hung vertical instead of horizontal.

thats what i figured would be best but making one would be extremely difficult, dont even know where to begin was hoping maybe someone on here made one already could offer some help lol

will magnets mess up the screen though?

no lcd's, CRT yes but not lcd.

use magnets that are sized correctly, you dont need 4 16 pound magnets. those are nice for plucking wrenches out of cars, but thats it.

I use 1 hard drive magnet to hold the panel on my bath tub in place. The industrial velcro kept letting go when the tub moved.
