  • MY first attempt at fab *WIP*

This is a dash piece for a 95 neon, and an 809GL:

Ive still got some work to do, as thats only primer right now. Im going to get a truck bed lining, like a rock guard paint for texture to not have it a solid flush color, rest of the interior is OEM, I want it to look the same.

Should have it done this weekend

looks good, you obviously had a lot of sanding to do.

yes I certainly did, it was quite a bit of work. first I had to glue the piece at the top, at the right angle, then I just drilled a few little holes through it around, put 2 layers of fiberglass cloth, cured, lightly sanded the fiberglass (so no MAJOR highs/lows) then just went with body filler over top to fill everything in. I also set it in the oven for a while at about 75C before I primed. Its a trick I learned that Ive had good experience with. Not sure if it works or not, but it always turns out in the end, im afraid to skip the step thinking it may not be doing anything. But I apply paint when its warm, not hot like I just took it out, but the paint seems to cure faster (stronger too maybe?)

i think it looks great. i am not a fan of the buttons (i remove mine and cover them up) but besides that it looks good from what i can see. have a pic of the stock piece?

no actually I dont, ill see if I can track one down on some neon forums or something. But its basically a double din stock deck that was in there. Had to cut out a few pieces before I could start fiberglassin

that looks really good dude...id be interested to find out if that oven trick does anything though if anyone knows...i like it with the buttons left on...looks more OEM that way cos most stock installs have buttons anyway.

The way I see it with the oven trick, is it heats it, makes sure there is no water in it for sure (since I rinced it before I painted) and the surface is warmer than if its cold, thing expand when hot and contract when cold. So its like having all its "pores" open when I spray it and as it dries it cools down closing it together. Its theory anyways, and my paints have always come out good

its funny how two people can see things so differently. i think that it looks more oem without the buttons. most oem's buttons are rectangular, uniform have large backlit print.

Yeah I know what you mean scott, but I didnt want to dink around with doing a auto-on mod, or relocating the buttons. It was simple and it fits really nice next to the shifter (just enough room for fingers) its auto

i have an idea :-) what if you just leave the power button?

regardless, if you like it that's all that counts. it still looks really good, i'm just an odd ball about some things.

Yeah, I did kinda fill in the spots where there were grooves, it didnt turn out aswell as I was hoping for that part, so im hoping the texture paint covers it up.... That would have been a good idea too, I use the + button to cytcle through brightnesses day/night
