  • 9.0" Wide LCD in 2005 Subaru Impreza WRX STi

Cross referencing my 9.0" Wide LVDS LCD Panel thread.

Assuming I'll be able to get those 9" Wide LCD panels I mentioned, I've started the design of how the LCD panel will be attached inside the dash of my 2005 WRX STi.

First, a really horrible quality picture with some MS Paint artwork to indicate the rough idea.. I'll replace it later with a better one.

Red box = viewable area of the LCD panel.
Green box = outer dimensions of the LCD panel.
Blue box = Roughly where a slim DVD drive would go, along with USB ports, switches, etc.

    LCD bracket, version 001.

Extremely rough draft, but it's enough for a start.

Used eMachineShop's freeware CAD/CAM software because it has a decent 3D visualization of the parts you're designing.

I may not actually have them make the parts for a one-off, though.

The idea is that the frame attaches to the inside of the dash in the same places as the radio does, and the LCD panel gets mounted to the front of the frame.

Then the ABS bezel gets opened up, trimmed, and shaped, and goes in front of the LCD panel.

This design is intended for Impreza's with the automatic climate control, so I don't know if it would fit the ones with the manual climate control.. but who knows, it may fit.

Design is subject to major revisions over the next few months..

Good luck! I have managed to stuff an 8.4" into a Forester dash. Not easy but worked in the end...

Yeah, I tried the same (an 8.4" LVDS screen) in my 2003 Impreza WRX, and never really finished it.

So I traded it in for a 2005 STi, and having found the 9" widescreen, I'm trying it again.

An 8" widescreen would have actually been the perfect size, but none are available in the LVDS connection, and I didn't want analog VGA.

          Nice.

I certainly have trouble seeing my dinky 7" screen and wish a bigger one would fit. I thought about doing this later on in my car's life, when it's no longer my primary car and I can leave it in pieces for days/weeks at a time. My manual climate controls are the biggest problem. I hope you finish this one because I'd like to see it in action. Good luck.

Yeah, since the manual climate controls are mounted to the dash, and not the radio bezel, you might actually have more room.

The auto climate controls are screwed to the radio bezel, which changes things a little bit in terms of vertical clearance.

The best thing about Subaru's is their interior modular nature.. I can modify any thing I want, because I can always get replacement parts online.

Example - the radio bezel is about $40, and the center console (where the radio mounts) is about $50.

Not bad in terms of cost for repairs back to stock condition.

Giuliano - if given dimensions, would you be willing to make a screen bracket for other screens? I have an 04, so I don't know if they use the same radio mounting points.

                  Sure!

PM me a picture of your center console so I know what type it is, and I'll see what I can do.

It is an 04, so it still has the manual climate controls. It should be the same as the 02-03 models.

I never found a real reason to go for a LVDS screen, at least in my case..This (800x600) it is more than perfect for the damn opening i have in the dash...even though i had to cut and "build" a lot. In terms of signal... well, it is connected thru a 5 meters long cable (custom made, double shielded) along with the touchscreen usb one, and works cristal clear.
I am preety sure i would have never succeed to install a 9" into my dash
I cannot wait to see your install once it is done. Fingers crossed!

Ah, I know that layout well..

I still have a leftover dash piece from my 03 where the radio mounts, so I'll take a look at the interior dimensions and see.

It's not really the signal quality, though that is one factor..

A LVDS-attached LCD panel acts just like the kinds that are attached to a laptop.

The video controller knows exactly what the physical resolution of the LCD is, so it can do nifty things like resolution scaling, such as scaling down 1280x800 to 800x480.

It can also do a "virtual screen" trick - ie, your desktop resolution is 1280x800, but the LCD is 800x480 - move the mouse beyond the LCD borders, and the picture scrolls around with it.

Although I'm not quite sure how a touchscreen panel would behave with that..

In any case, I've confirmed that Commell can provide a custom BIOS to support 800x480, so for me it's only a matter of deciding whether I want a LV-675 Pentium M, or a LV-677 Core Duo / Solo.

They even had a bios update out for my older LV-671 to support 800x480, which is perfect for testing purposes.

                            8.4" LVDS as second display..

A thought just occurred to me..

I still have my original AUO 8.4" 4:3 aspect display that runs 800x600 over LVDS, with a touch screen, and it works fine. Plenty bright, too, with a touch screen.

I can get a PCI Express adapter card for the Commell LV-677 to support a second LVDS LCD panel as another display.

How cool would it be to add the 8.4" as a secondary display, contained in a ruggedized frame, and stored in the glove box or under the passenger seat?

I bet I could come up with some kind of an armature to swing it up into view, and back down out of the way for storage..
