  • Carputer Cases- Unique/cases you can mod

Ok I was trying to come up with a good title for this thread but gave up. I also couldn't deicde if I wanted to post this in General Discussion, Hardware, or Fabrication. I decided to put it here since this will need to be fabricated to work. It was sparked by some ideas I have seen past and present.

I am a bit lazy at times and prefer to take something that is used for one thing, but can used in a another way to fit my needs, rather than build something from scratch.

With that being said, I am looking for interesting/abstract ideas for cases that could be used for carputer cases with some modifications.

I have seen such ideas as this on this board or my own:
    • Playstation(s) PS2
    • Key lockbox
    • Electrical panel box
    • Aluminum tool case/suitcase
    • Plastic tool case
    • other electrical type looking boxes (see yellow box below)
    • Poker chip case
    • Gun case
    • Army ammo boxes
    • cash drawer
    • briefcase-stealthy!
    • 19" rackmount (not as unique but an option)
    • legos-weird but fun to build
    • satelite receiver
    • VCR-oldschool

I like the plastic tool case idea because I could fit that underneath my seat (not always a good mounting location, see FAQ) and it would help keep water/snow/fries out of the case.

I was going to mount my new mATX board in the trunk, but now I feel like I could fit it under my seat where my itx was. What are your guys ideas for cases that I might have overlooked?

If you post an idea include a link or possible location to purchase it and a price. Dimensions would be nice too. I want to kind of organize this for others too, not just myself.

Now let's think outside the box. Sorry...that was lame.

I know you already mentioned key cabinets, but I love my Ikea Karbo. They MIGHT be a bit tough to find (seems my local Ikea sells out all the time). I also can't find it on the American Ikea website, but here's a link to their UK site:
      http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/store...roductId=12847
Edit: Found the US link in another thread on MP3Car.com... http://www.ikea.com/webapp/wcs/store...umber=30046450

It's cheap, strong, and works REALLY well. It's almost like it was MADE for the Mini-ITX/EPIA form factor. The boards fit PERFECTLY. A little (well, maybe a lot) of Dremelling is all it takes.

Since I don't have pictures of mine (yet)... Here's another project I've seen using it in Internet-land:
      http://www.mini-itx.com/projects/bmwpc/

      There's even a Sketch-Up model of it:
      http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehou...f549416a&hl=en

You can even find a few people on MP3Car using it if you search!

I am useing a Aluminum tool case/suitcase from home dpt. For a full size Mb, the case is made of hardboard with thick aluminum foil on the outside. It can be cut with a knife.

It will not fit under a seat and has to go in the trunk!

And then what I'm personally thinking about doing by mounting under my trunk lid- the POS cash drawer:

Great ideas. The IKEA case I though about but couldn't find anymore here in the US. I like the poker chip case too. I need something about 15" wide by 11' Deep 3.5" tall. I'd like to see that cash drawer in action too.

A brief case would make for an obvious but stealthy trunk install. (If you get what I mean.) No one is going to suspect that the innocent looking brief case sitting way in the back is what's driving you state of the art carpc set up!
                  Carputer Haiku (thanks Ian Hughes)

Yeah, and I'm noticing that they are selling for (what seems like) some serious bank on eBay. Easily twice what they sell for. I might grab a stack of them next time I'm at Ikea (if I happen to see them).

If they fit a mATX i kind of liek how cheap they are. What's amazing is that we are the only state with not one but TWO IKEAs and neither one have them from what I have seen.

MRjamie-steath is good. The briefcase is better than the tool cases. Tools are worth money and easy to take if in a case. However a briefcase, who the hell wants to steal someones work. Maybe a plastic Jack storage compartment. I have to go looking for one big enough.
