  • carputer setup, came out cheaper than expected. what's missing?

    M1atx: Case/cpu1.5/hard drive80gb/ ram512/power supply/onboardsound, Ebay: $420

touch screen, liliput, mp3car store: $250

Gps, Microsoft Streets and Trips 2007 with GPS Locator, amazon: 130

    Bluetooth dongle, for bluetooth: 30

Road Runner software: freeware..I'll donate if I like it.

    External DVD: around 50 bucks?

That comes out to around $880

This setup should get me Music playability, dvd playability, and Navigation.

I thought a carputer would cost me mucho buckos, but this is actually really very reasonable..

BTW, I have a Rockford Fosgate 3sixty.2 in my current audio setup(hence the need for the bluetooth dongle), so I'm hoping that the internal soundcard will give me decent clean signal and the 3sixty will take care of the rest. I'm hoping this will save me money on a sound card..

What else am I missing, any suggestions?

      Operateing system?
Depending where you are putting your computer you may need some VGA extentions/usb.

thanks.. I did a search on nex soundcards and could not find info on it.. unless "nex" was a typo?

I'm planning on running xp, and I'm assuming the touchscreen will have a driver that enables touch control, correct? I probably will need a long vga cable for the monitor, I think I have one laying around though.

Must've been a little sleepy or something. I meant external. You could however, go with PCI also, but USB/FireWire have a few advantages over PCI.

VGA, USB and keyboard extensions, maybe a USB hub somewhere... I'll recommend CableWholesale or whatever that site is from Pricewatch. Cheap but their min. order is $10. Also, I haven't tried MS S&T, but I'm pretty happy with Delorme Street Atlas 2007, $100 w/ receiver. Compare them. Be warned both of these GPS recievers have issues resuming after hibernation.
How about a mini Keyboard that fits in the glove compartment? eBay, about $35

I have been reading a lot on sound cards, cause i want to make my system carPC only, and i havent found good reason of witch one is better, could give me some light on this point.

And mention some of the good USB cards, i found the SB LIVE, and some others, but more info is always good.

                Thanks.

If you consider the SB live a good card, you could go with pretty much any card..... They really suck! There's so many cards out there. It's really something you should look into for yourself, depending on your demands.

I dont know much about computer parts, i know how to make a computer from the parts, but dont know what is good or bad, best i do is look on internet some reviews, thats why i'm asking.

I see the SB X-fi xtreme gamer, and i like it, but dont know about external sound cards.

I have and aftermarket sound system, 2 amps, 1 for subs and 1 for comp.

I wouldn't go for a PCI card like the X-fi, to much chance of getting noise in your signalpath. Then there's space.... unless that's no issue for you. Creative cards are ok, but you'll pay 90 of the brandname. There's really so many options out there, but every single person has different needs. Even people who are going in the same direction, to accomplish similar goals may have different opinions. Look at mine, RedGTiVR6's, durwoods and Turbocad6's systems for instance..... All 4 of them are COMPLETELY different.

Don't get me wrong, I do wanna help, but it's pretty damn hard when you have come to a certain level. When you just want some music, people could advise an easy and simple setup with standard stuff. But you're using an RF3sixty, so I assume you want to process a bit too... Once you've got to that stage, it's 90% up to you really....

Look for the thread on USB/firewire cards in the car-audio FAQ. There's a whole bunch of desent cards listed, with the basic features underneath them. Most of them have a price listed also. Once you determined what you're looking for, at which budget, we can help you wade through the options by looking into all of them on a more critical note.

                              okay more additions to costs:

Cables, misc installation items, wifi(i think I have an old usb laying around somewhere).. I'm figuring maybe another80 bucks more?

I may go with Iguidance for GPS instead of microsoft, because reviews and screenshots seem better. Do the GPS hibernations issues have anything to do with the USB hibernations issues. If so, I can go with a non-usb GPS receiver.

As for sound card, durwood convinced me to go with this Presonus recording unit I have laying around..
                              http://www.presonus.com/firebox.html
If I can get VST plugins to work for processing I will sell my 3sixty.2 to recoup some costs, altough I was looking forward to embedding that cool 3sixty software into RR.
