    http://www.fit-pc.com/index.htm

Check it out, its on the cheap, and could handle basic carPC needs. I think its...$280?

500 mhz processor with 256 MBs of ram. Not bad
    CarPC status:

    [XXXXXXXXXX] 100% Complete

    [XXXXXXXXXX] 100% Software

CarPC v1.2 is now in effect. Software updates and hardware additions to come.

Looks awesome with great potential (especially the low power draw), but, 500 mhz would hurt for a lot of people as far as being underpowered goes.

Wow...its hard to believe that it only draws 5 watts. I am running a carpc with xp and centrafuse on a 550mhz p3 machine and it runs just fine with no lag. I am not sure how that 50 mhz will affect performance though.

Seach for GEODE on these forums. People have used Geode-based systems in builds before.
It's low power-draw, but also low-powered. You're not going to be rocking 3D visualizations or ripping DVDs on something like this.

Is the CPU upgradable? If I had a spare AMD would I be able to toss it in? Kinda get rid of the OVERLY low CPU size...granted, it would pick up the draw but not by much if I did a small upgrade...

thats neat, i had an 800mhz amd, with 512ram and to be honest that just about coped running PC navigator, Road Runner & Phone control.net (Using decent skins ).

You would have to really tweak windows to get the best out of that, but still its a great idea and size!

sorry, I'm pretty sure it wont be upgradable. Its not an intel/amd cpu so it will have a weird socket, and unfortunately, its RAM isn't upgradable.

Install Xp Lite, that works on the barest of systems just fine. (AKA XP without the CRAP)

I see no prob running the music, frontend, and navi all at the same time. (I'm a legacy hardware buff, i can't throw an old PC out)

I know that Roadrunner needs a bit of a system to run on...I don't know how well a Geode at 500Mhz does...but a Mini-itx 10000 (1Ghz) system is the equivalent of an 800Mhz cpu...and that is about as slow as you can go for RR.

                  But it is tempting.

Runs from 5 Volts. That would be temping to buy. Easy to get a steady 5 Volts from a car.

                        Now...
Something like this to control devices or something...
As a music player it would be OK.

You try XPLite or something like that? Maybe even Win 2000 (its XP without the crap, it runs great tell you the truth) Usually a RAM upgrade is all you need to boost a slow system.

Comp USA recently had a two day sale on an Acer laptop for $299. For that you get a big screen (15.4")and a 1.6 GHz processor. The sale is over, but someone showed me a $399 lap top that they sell at that price all of the time. I think they are a bit harder to integrate, but that's a lot of bang for the buck.
