  • Netstumbler for Wireless AP scanning. Works with DLink USB.

I just tried Netstumbler for my car and it works sorta.

My Dell laptop has a Truemobile 1150 MiniPCI internal wireless card. Netstumbler works perfect with it. When it detects a connection it makes a little sound to alert you.

My CARPC has the DLink USB wireless adapter and it detects wireless networks but doesn't make the sound when it detects one and also for some strange reason, it does not display the Channel number.

Anyone else use this with USB?

If i recall correctly, netstubler is built specifically for a couple of different chips in wireless cards. Last I checked, Dlink cards didnt use a 100% compatible chip. But, I could be wrong.

I tried using it briefly the other day with my Orinoco silver and it seemd to work OK. Displayed a few networks in this apartment complex but I could not connect to any of them due to WEP encryption.

SuperMatty, you could'nt connect to any because of WEP?

        Can't you crack it?

NS works great with my Linksys WUSB11 w/XP. Had to enable midi output under options to get sound. Had my first wardriving experience this past sunday, mooched some internet access, then ran home and double checked the security of MY AP.

As I understand it, NetStumbler doesn't work with Prism based cards (early D-Links, Linksys, etc.) but does work with Prism II based cards (later D-Links, Linksys, etc.). I have always used it with Orinoco Turbo II cards, and it works great. Plus, they have such a nice jack for an external antenna...

No, but if you look on eBay you can find the Dlink I got for 60 buks or so.

I donno what the .000000000002 cents will do though for the purchase.

My DLink USB works fine with XP.

I did notice one cool thing-------------------->

If I install the old drivers on the CD, and use the new utility it automatically connects to all the networks it finds.

If I install the new drivers, then it seems you have to connect to the WiFi manually and then keep it in the list of your networks to make it connect automatically next time you are in the vicinity.

The USB Linksys should work easily with XP.
