  • airbag warning after taking apart dash board

Alright, today I took apart part of the dashboard in my 2002 Volvo S60. I took out the radio/cd player. To get there I also had to take out the climate control section. When I put everything back after I was done poking around, I turned on the car and my airbag light turns on and a message pops up saying to check airbags immediately. How can I fix this?

If you cycled the key while your climate control was out, or left it on, thats most likely the Culprit. Volvos can system relies on the Climate module to relay signals to and from the SRS control module. Its the downside to computer controlled vehicles. Youll have to see your Volvo retailer to reset that one.

many vehicles rely on that kind of system.

If my GTi, we removed the seat, cycled the key, then put the seat back in while working on the car...and we had the same thing happen.

Alright, so my airbags should still be working properly then? How much do you think it would cost to have a dealer reset it?

Depending on the dealer, your relationship with them and their labor rate... Nothing more than 1 hr of their labor. Especially if you tell them you just want it reset, because you were fooling around with the radio and CCM and accidentally set it. If you are in there alot, and know your service advisor well enough, you might be able to get it knocked out for free. Figure 50-100 bucks though.

Your airbags should still be working. The code is going to be something like : SRS module faulty communication with CEM . Everything works, but the light is still lit because there is a POTENTIAL problem as far as the computer is concerned.

check the connection under your passenger seat. i had this problem and by reconnecting it the light went away. The computer thought that the sensor was missing in the chair.
Cant code cause I dont know how, but give me the paint bucket and my eraser and have at you!

I'll check it out, but I didn't touch anything under the seat so I don't see how this could have caused the problem.

I also found a guide on how to reset the messages on the computer, but it doesn't reset critical messages and therefore didn't reset this one.

Chances are slim to none. If im not mistaken the main seat connectors under you seats are held together via a 7 or 8 mm bolt. I doubt it fell apart. Take my work on the Climate control module, I work on Volvos for a living.

With most cars, if an airbag fault is detected they will NOT deploy in the event of a crash.

i had this happen in my moms Nissan maxima after i took her glove box out to install a new blower motor. all i had to do was turn the key to the on position then the off position 3 times in under like 20 seconds and it worked. maybe theres something that has to be done like that with volvos

biggomma, I will try that, but I tried another method to reset all error messages and it reset any other error message, but not the airbag one.

Paul, theres no backdoor trick, its gonna have to be done be the dealership. You might get lucky if you leave you batt. disconnected for a few days, but you stand to cause other problems that way.

Yeah I gave up on the backdoor trick. I'm not too worried about the error message though, it really doesn't get in the way much. Next time I take it to the dealership to get something fixed I'll have them check it out.
