  • Carputer HD Radio Options

Lookd around on the board and didn't really see a comprehensive thread.

Now that the carputer has been running flawlessly for a year I'm exploring HD Radio tuners. My hope is to eliminate my car stereo and use the PC for everything now.

What HD Radio options do we have? I was hoping something was available with multicasting.

Do those available options connect via serial port or USB? Ease of use to plug into existing antenna structures in most vehicles?

Any guidence would be greatly appreciated, as well as user testimony on usits they found and liked.

    Thanks!

Thanks Quantum. I read through the first part of the 'Big thread' mentioned but not a whole lot of it sank in. Was hoping there was something a little more watered down. I've been out of the works for a year or so.

While I was only able to skim the first 5 or so pages it would is it safe to say that is THE comprehensive mp3car.com on HD Radio related?

                ummm, yeah.

There's not much to understand as the visteon, et al, simply plug into your serial port for control using mitchjs's interface cable and then into your line in on the sound card.

Then it's just software. Either mitchjs's standalone pcr app, embbeded or not, or one of the many skins that have it incorporated (void comes to mind, what I'm using now).

                Or roll your own.............

                Good luck.

                  Go with the Visteon.

If you want to go on the cheap side, you don't need Mitch's cable, though I use it to integrate into the touch screen. You can always just use the little screen that comes with the Visteon HD unit to control the stations and such. Just not a very elegant solution.

                  Cheers, Marc

P.S. the thread is a little long. Try reading the first page, then the last page, the second page, the second to last page. That way you can get some understanding quickly whether it works well or not (or end up completely confused )

                    Thanks guys,

I ended up just biting the bullet and reading the majority of the whole big thread. My understanding is that some of these modules may be a little iffy in quality and performance, but they're way cheaper than the $400 for the Eclipse HD Radio tuner for my stereo.

                      Iffy?

Well, keep in mind, these units are kind of not being used as intended and that they are being installed by a multitude of users with different skill levels.

Not all the problems may be the fault of the units.......

                      Cheers
