  • Need help carputer project

For those that have put in a carputer. I've been wanting one for a while and just got the Mazda 6 2004 love the car now it's time to PIMP my ride here are some of the stuff I'm looking at getting

    -CARPUTER system

Saw this one on the mp3 website and it looks like it is the best for me to save me the hassle and work just need to install

    http://store.mp3car.com/Mp3Car_Custo..._p/ccc-121.htm

    Cost $650

Your thoughts and opinions is it a good system to get?

    Screen

I want to get a pop out screen the fits in the dash of the Mazda and it pops out when you use it so here is one I found
    http://www.mpegcar.com/acatalog/Disp....html#aMZ700TS

    Cost $480

Is it worth it or is there a motorized lilliput screen that's better?

    Front end

I was looking at roadrunner to operate the front end of the carputer I've read a lot of good things about it.

    Your thoughts and opinions?

Mostly I want to use it to
    -Play music
    -Play videos
    -GPS
-Plug in PS2 but only for long road trips
-Internet (not really a big deal but would be nice to have)

Since I've never done this for those that have any and all help would be great.

Questions for you guys out there that have done this do I need anything else for this setup?

Is RoadRunner a free program that you can download? If not where do I buy it?

Thanks for all your help in advance guys.

First, I would suggest not getting a motorized screen. a LOT of members have used them and most of them end up breaking due to cheap gears.

Second, Road Runner is free, you can find the files for it in the Software > Front Ends forums.

Lastly, It seems like you are pretty new to the hobby so do a LOT of research, this project isn't going to be a weekend thing, you'll want to read a lot of the forums, and spend a lot of time planning your install, if not you'll end up with a install that will fail a few months in. As many other members will tell you they spent months doing some research and planning components, wiring, and how they were going to install.

Yeah I know what you mean I've been looking at a lot of stuff I've been plannin ghtis for about two months but I want to make sure A. I got everything I need and B. I don't end up getting frustrated or upset because I messed up one part.

I think where I might start is with the car PC and just get it up and running with the screen.

Looks like you into one of these projects too. What do you plan on using for your touch screen?

Xenarc or Lilliput ONLY...i prefer Xenarc, higher price, but higher quality, better warranty

It really all depends on preference..... Like the crooked toe says, stay with Lilliput or Xenarac, me, I prefer Lilliput, but because it worked with my install in terms of looks with my interior. Also try to read through the forums on reviews of MoBos, there are alot, and most have their weaknesses and strengths.

-Play music most MoBos can handle that

-Play videos do research, for me to get the perfect video I wanted, with a good onboard GPU, I went with a IEI Kino-690SP

-GPS Most boards can handle this

-Plug in PS2 but only for long road trips This will actually have to do mostly with the screen, and using either the line in on your PC or a switch to change the sound from PC to PS2. Trying to get the PS2 to play through the PC via a TV card looks crappy.

-Internet (not really a big deal but would be nice to have) I recommend Sprint, its $59.99 a month but you get super fast speeds, especially since most areas have the EVDO Rev A now. I have it in my car and love it.

              So far I'm this far

              1. Found where I can get the Screen that fits in the map box of my mazda 6 that is a motorized touch screen

problem: it's in china and they want me to western union them the money it's like 500 but the closest one in on ebay for 700 in austrailia. The question is do a take a chance in China and risk getting robbed like a blind kid?

              2. I probably will go with an old HP laptop my sister doesn't us anymore for the car PC
since most of the good software and thing for a car pc run off of windows it looks like that will be the best fit for my by trying to run gps, movies, music, roadrunner or something on the front end.

Problems- I'm trying to figure out what to use for the power supply from the battery to the laptop I don't want to just plug in a converter into the lighter I want a permemnent install so the Laptop starts when I open the door of the car and stays booting even with engine cranking and hybernates when the car turns off.

Any help from the vets who have done installs already or are doing one right now.

              Thoughts, opions, suggestions?

Dont ever pay for anything through Western Unioun, it is very unsafe and if the person decides to screw you, there is no action you can take to get your money back.

Is there a way for the product to be deliviered but when it arrives I pay for it or else it goes back to where it came from?

That would have to be set up between you and them. Why dont they have a PayPal account and just have the funds put there?

So Here's the 411 on my carputer project.

                        1. I'm thinkning about going with a lilliput GL-701 7" it's the one with the fold out screen as a single din system.

I really wanted to get the map box one but I didn't have the green for it this is about 200 dollars cheaper and it does the same thing except it isn;t in the map box. I have the Mazda 6

                        2. Got my sister's laptop but it's keeps wanting to reinstall windows I really don't care about a clean install but my sister wants her old photos off of it I need to figure out how to stop the install get to the photos take them off and then do a clean install. Frustrating but I'm that much closer.

                        Problems.

I'm still trying to figure out a power supply that is a perminate install for the power of the laptop.

FOr those that read this and respond thanks for the help.

                          Carputer project update 2-9-09

Well I tried to get my sis old laptop to get working but no dice so I ended up abandoning it all together.

So I decided to go with a netbook instead. Ended up gettingthe Asus 1000H for the carputer. 1.6ghz atom proccessor 160gb HDD windows XP SP3. Only put me back 350.

I am planning on getting the lilliput 609 I believe it is will have to double check the model # but as they say here we go.

                            Alph-
Yeah, you don't wanna use laptops for these projects.. if there's anything I've learned, that's it. You're best off getting a desktop computer and stripping it for parts. As for power, you'll be looking to get a PSU (Power supply unit) such as an M2-ATX (Ebay).
I have a lilliput 701 personally... works great for me.

One thing that you might want to investigate too, is using a laptop harddrive for your storage. They're generally built for more abuse than traditional desktop harddrives. I got one off ebay for 60 bucks, for a 160gb.. then I got an adapter to plug it into IDE for an additional 5 bucks

                              To Esona's post above...
Yeah I thought abut getting a desktop and messing with it but the little asus I got will have a dual porpose I want to keep it as is and use both as a carputer and travel book for when I go on longer trips without the car. I also like the fact that because it's a laptop it's easily removable for safe keeping if need be.
