  • USB TV tuner options

    hi
i'm looking for a TV tuner and FM receiver which i could plug in into the USB port as i've got all the others slots already filled with stuff..
maybe someone knows a decent device that will work with RoadRunner as well?
    will this work?

For FM/AM u should consider getting HD radio.

TV tuners typically have less than desirable FM antenna strength. Nothing like your HU.

HD radio is not sat radio, its free off the air. Its new technology FM/AM radio that sound really nice.

No its serial interface, you can get a serial>usb converter if you want usb. The tv/radio combos usually lack the reception and features.

i'm still thinking about the usb FM/tv device.
i could use the car's antenna to get better reception? tv would be an extra..

The FCC has said that analogue signal transmission will stop in January 2009 (may have been extended) so why would you want to put all that money into hardware that picks up analogue signals?

Why do you assume analog only? Any USB tuner you can buy for the past few years has been capable of ATSC digital reception. It's actually far less hardware.

I would be really skeptical of any tuner maintaining lock though while moving at 70 mph - especially through a dense arrangement of tall buildings, trees, and hills. Most of the current and older gen demods have a hard enough time doing echo cancellation with a large stationary antenna. Some of the new gen 8VSB demods might be better though. I plan on adding ATSC reception at some point to my rig for tailgating - feeding a projector and inflatable screen. But I haven't yet worked out the ideal antenna.

I thought all over the air television was analogue.....like using rabbit ears.

Nope. Nearly every station has been simulcasting analog and digital signals for 3-4+ years now- most of the later being in 1080i mpeg2 hi-def with 5.1 AC3 (max bit-rate of 19.4 Mb/s). The analog transmitters are being shutdown in Feb'09. FCC's eventual plan is to move all the stations into the upper range of UHF so they can re-purpose and auction off VHF and lower UHF bands.

And digital off-air reception works just fine with rabbit ears, the old school huge radio shack house antennas, or even the limo style boomerangs; despite all the fancy marketing saying you need something else.

Why not a slingBox for tv purposes?

Get a unit with diversity (2 antennas in simplified terms). The main problem with antennas in cars in not signal strength.
Most cars have diversity systems OEM, and that is for a reason.
