  • How much is to much?

I was looking at putting a carputer in my truck. I want to run rr as my front end, and all I really want to do is play movies and music, do OBDII on my truck, and gps.

I have a stacked music library of like 8000 songs, my current setup thinking is this:
[HL]BIOSTAR MCP6P-M2 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
    AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ 2.4GHz Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Processor
    mushkin 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Desktop Memory
EXCELSTOR Jupiter Series 160GB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
Creative Sound Blaster SB0570 Audigy SE Sound Card[/HL]

I know I need a monitor (i think im gonna use the one from gooddeals18.com 10.4 inch or 8.4 inch. I know I also need a dvd drive. Software will be windows xp. iguidance probably for gps,

My question is the setup I have now(highlighted) will only run me like 197.95, Is this overkill or will I need stronger or what? I just want minimal lag, and minimal heat as i might be installing this behind my dash

First there is no such thing as overkill.

I did notice that you left a psu off of your list. I would highly reccomend using one since it regulates voltage (greatly extends or doesnt shorten the life of your equipment). Also the "intelligent" models are helpful in preventing dead batteries.

Additionally you may want to consider a frontend to simplify operation while driving.

    Otherwise sounds fine.

didnt mean to leave those out, I was thinking the m2-atx, for my front end I put rr up in the description but I will be using Road Runner, or so I think, this changes everyonce and a while but I seem to always fall back to Road Runner because its free.

Im into overkill systems, so this is a nice setup. Only issue i can see is you powering it... You may need to buy something like an OPUS 320, and that may not even be enough. They have PC wattage calculators that will give you an estimate of what you need. If I were you I would use mobile components if possible. I went with a AMD Turion 64 X2 1.8ghz TL-56 (100.00 with shipping included) and a KINO-690S1 (was most expensive item, 280.00 with shipping), this MoBo is really over kill sporting a powerful onboard ATI 1200 series graphics card. I have 667 DDR2 (50.00 from tigerdirect). 250gb SATA Drive (85.00 from compusa) and a SoundBlaster Live 24 USB (goes for 50.00 nowadays). By going with mobile stuff i didnt have to worry about going over the 320 watts. You could go inverter but those are [email protected] when it comes to Car PCs.

Yea that is going to be big and require a lot of power to run. Also, I don't know if you have looked, but it's hard to find a small reasonably priced micro-atx case. Most of them are pretty big or pretty expensive. Also you are probably going to have trouble with heat because of the higher power for the CPU (although you can run more fans & bigger CPU heatsink in the larger case).

Definately check out the mobile versions of the AMD and Intel processors. You can find very good deals on laptop pulls and get it for under 50$. Motherboard will more expensive for the micro-itx, but you will need a much smaller power supply and that will save a lot of money and almost come out even.

if this is a 65w processor, and no graphic card, i dont see any problem with a psu like m4atx, dsatx, or opus320 powering it.

but u also have to take into account the 3.5 HDD (use more power then a 2.5) and all other devices.

I was thinking about going with a notebook harddrive. i kinda just threw that 1 in there. I have tons of room behind my dash (05 f150) and also lots in my console, both of which I could tap into the air conditioning unit to keep the case cool, however I might then run into condensation problems. Like I said im still pretty open as to im redoing my speakers and subs first.

And I also think im going to need an xtra battery (yellowtop or odyssey) any ways.

for my subs im getting the new si mags, and probably 2 sundown 1000d amps or 1 1500d and run it at .5 ohm, which I already know will wreck my electrical. (Big 3 upgrade soon)

                Just throwing around some ideas

and as for the microatx case, i was just gonna fab one out of sheet metal or an old toaster or something like that. the mb is 9 inches by like 6 (close to it).

I don't have any issues in my system, which is similar, p4 northwood 2.6 HT (55-60 watt I guess), 2*512 mb ram, 3.5'' 80GB hdd, pci audigy 2 and also powering my monitor, usb dvd, usb tv card, usb bluetooth, usb wi-fi and usb GPS with m2-atx with 5 fans (2x 80mm, 1x 60mm, 1x pci slot fan and cpu fan). Never had any issues. Neither heat nor power. But now I'm building a smaller case. If anything changes I'll be posting it to here!

Yeah my system is similar too, bigger hard drive but no sound card.
