  • Carputer help (Acer Aspire one and Xenarc lcd)

    Hello all,
I am was refer here by people in other forums. I am been reading around install carputer for couple months now. Most of the thread i read are mostly 2 years old projects and most people use desktop instead of laptop. i have some questions regard powering everything.

to start off, I have a 2004 Acura TL w/ no navigation. this is why i want to install the computer so i can use GPS and play some mp3 and MTV.

    So far i have purchase:
    1. Xenarc 7" LCD monitor 2008 version
    2. BU-353 GPS receiver
    3. Acer Aspire one mini laptop w/ 1.6ghz Atom, 120gb HHD, 1gb Memory

The Xenarc LCD comes with a cigarette adapter for the car to power up the monitor. On my laptop however it doesn't comes with one, but i think i can purchase a after market cigarette adapter for laptops to power it.

My questions are buy using the cigarette outlet,
will it cost harm to the laptop or lcd?
will it burn up the fuse in the car?
Is there anyway to start the computer went the car start without me reaching to turn it on?
I am going to use the denovo mini keyboard, which can hibernate the system or shut in down, but i don't know how to start the system without me have to press the power bottom.

      POWER:
Hardwire a Carnetix CNX-P1900 to the wires going to your cars 12v power and Acc signal. You can use the cig outlets wires but on some cars they are not always on. Either way make good connections using solder or crimps to wires at least 2.5mm in diameter and fused to a minimum of 15 amps.

From the output of the Carnetix power your pc ( don't know what the Aspire needs for power ) and power the Xenarc.

Aspire One has 19VDC input, says so on the power brick. Best bet is one of the many power adapters for car use on Ebay, you'll pay very little: less than $40 I believe. Then the adapter can be permanently installed where the laptop will live in the car. And you won't have to bring your home adapter anywhere either.

...and there's no harm in using these adapters. You can get a power surge protector for 12v and put that in between if you like. Read the above for more.
And the link for the power button..... I wouldn't do that if I were you! Unless you have some mad soldering skills, which I doubt by the very questions you posed. I'm going the easy route: mount the AAOne with an adjustable bracket, using the trackpad for now. Later I will mod a touchscreen into it for frontend usage.
          1) easy
          2) removable easily
          3) No need for any power button mods
          4) Super cheap (touchscreen kits are $80 at most)
          5) Barely noticable "ball" mount in dash with minimal cutting to only one panel for getting to solid dash brackets underneath.

Screw the touchscreen LCDs, I just paid a little more and got a whole darn laptop that rocks!
