  • Wireless Access Point Signal Boosters

    Hey guys,

Has anyone had any experience with wireless access point/router signal boosters?

I am looking specifically at the Linksys WSB24.

    http://www.linksys.com/products/prod...id=38&prid=478

It has +14 dBm peak gain, +20 dBm receiver gain and max +20 dBm Tx input power. I honestly have no idea what those numbers mean. I am trying to get the signal to reach inside of my car in my driveway. I can connect the Mp3Car to the wireless network when the trunk door is open, but not when it's closed.

I've also heard about signal boosters you can make at home, but it seems like they have to be pointing in a certain direction to boost the signal. Any help/advice is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Depending on what AP you have, it might be possible to attach an external arial on the outside of your house.

    Best regards,

Build an antenna out of a Foldgers coffee can. Works very well, and quite cheap.

do a google search for cantenna or pringles antenna and you'll find all the info to make them.

the linksys product is a short range amp, if your access point is located on the opposite side of your house you will still be pushing the limits into your carputer, what type of card are you using in the carputer? if it's one of the usb ones you won't get even get close unless you do like aaron said and put an antenna, but even still you will be lucky to get the signal.

Thanks for all the help everyone. It's a linksys USB wireless adapter in the car. The Carputer does get a signal when the trunk door is open.

I think I will experiment with the cantennas. Does anyone know if installing a cantenna will affect the range of the signal in areas of the house the cantenna is NOT pointing towards?

The cantenna's are ratehr direction, you would most likely be best with an omni-directional antenna. There are a few of those DIY guides around for that type too.
Look at: www.ackers.org.uk under the antenna section for some good links.

                Alright! Thanks for the links!

I think this will be my next project (budget willing).

I've also wondered, I know that MAC Address filtering (where only certain MAC addresses can access your WAP) is a good form of security. WAP Encryption is a bit of a hassle. Is the MAC address filtering enough to keep out unwanted wireless network connections? I know that it is, but I want to hear some opinions since it really seems sorta simple.

no it isn't enough, mac spoofing is the simpliest thing to do, if someone was running kismet or ethereal they'd have all of the auth'd macs so it would be pointless, just turn on WEP (not WAP ) and disable SSID broadcasting for starters.

To be perfectly honest, there is no way to secure wireless.

well yeah, as we speak a coworker and i are testing KisMAC and breaking WEP on our networks.

The point of my reply was mac auth isn't going to do anything to keep someone off of your network. WEP does a little better job, SSID disabling kills it from MacStumbler, iStumbler, and NetStumbler lists. Kismit and KisMAC will still see them, but most people are running some form of *Stumbler program.

So what would you guys say is the best way to keep your network secure. I mean, if someone is working on a project to enhance his or her signal to be able to cover a 1/4 mile city block, you don't want it to be unsecured.

What kinds of things would someone be able to do with access into your wifi signal cloud? Even with WEP security, MAC filtering, unbroadcasted and different SSID. Is there anyway to completely deny them access to the wireless access point?

I think THE best way is Hardware VPN...my 2 cents.

Like it has been stated, there is no physical way to make it secure.

If someone really wants to they will access your network
