  • Strange RAM Problem with Infill G4

    Hi,

I'm currently trying to get an Infill G4 to work. The problem is that it only recognises 192MB of my 512MB SIM (in BIOS as well as in XP).
Does anyboy know if this is caused by a certain BIOS setting ?

    regards,

Sounds like it's incompatible...is it double-side? Maybe the board only like single sided modules...

I had my 1GB suddenly detected as 512MB one day in G4. I swear it could be detected as 1GB for months until one day CF started crashing did I realise only 512Mb was detected and it was not enuff with all the plugins running. Clears ram test even when only detected as 512MB. My dealer did a change to another brand with different density (single vs double sided as WuNgUn mentioned, can't remember which works) and it has been fine since. Don't ask me why. **** happens.

Do a ram test. If it clears, chances are something similar to what I've encounter but usually ram should be detected as full or half.

What kind of RAM test do you mean ? I coud'nt find such an option in the BIOS.

Im afraid that WuNgUn is on the right track (regarding the double sided SODIMM).

Yes WuNgUn probably hit the nail on the head. I forgot the reason your G4 is left with 192MB is becos 64MB is assigned to the built-in video which works out to be 256MB, half of 512MB detected if you are facing the same problem I had. I can't remember whether the info I found was specific to G4 but I certainly remember one I read about via "micro/mini" boards being fussy with either density (single or double sided) ram which is along the same line I suspected so I checked the old ram data sheet and told the dealer to bring a replacement that is opposite density. Sorry can't help you further as I can't recall the specific density. Perhaps you can do the same as what I had done.

Regarding memory ram test, if you are not facing any problem, chances are the ram is just incompatible but you can never be sure. Ram test is not found in BIOS but run from a bootable cd http://www.memtest86.com/

Well, I have replaced the SODIMM with a 1GB module and it seems to work (992 MB reported free). The old memory was probably defect.

regards and thx for the help,
