  • Wifi chipsets and wardriving

Ok, now that I have a stable, working carpc once again (albiet stripped down at the moment), im looking once again at fun extras, and of course wardriving is at the top of that list (with wifi syncing and gps routing being the pratical applications). I know there are apps out there besides netstumbler, but when I looked at them 6 months ago, none seemed as robust, have any matured? And the netstumbler readme says its still doesnt support prism chipsets, but then the main(news) page says it does under xp, but not the d-link, etc etc etc, so whats the story? And whats a good cheap usb adapter that will work with netstumbler (my car is running xp)? or are there any robust (gui, windows based, gps integration) apps for the prism chipset now?

i do a bit of wardrvifing but mine is a pci card. I helped code one wifi sniffer app in linux. The main reason why not a lot of adaptors are supported is the guys that code need that adaptor to get it working. They are still expensive for freeware developers to afford. You'll notice on a lot of those sites they will ask for hardware donations.

My advice is to check out a lot of apps and see what they supports and buy an adaptor based on that. USB might be a bit tricky to find.

Get an ORiNoco card. I have 2 (a usb one and a PCMCIA one)

The usb version didnt work with NetStumbler 3.something (and I was using WinME at the time), but the latest version may work--I havent tried it yet.

THe interesting thing about the USB version is that it has a PCMCIA card inside it. I am assuming that you do not have any PCMCIA slots on your carPC, so I'd buy the USB version and if it doesnt work the way you want it to, you can crack it open and use a PCI-PCMCIA adapter.

Basically, the guy who wrote netstumbler works for Avaya (aka lucent aka Orinoco aka Proxim), so your it is pretty much guaranteed to work with an Orinoco card.

WinXP and Linksys cards are seeming to work on Netstumbler for some people, head over to their forums and register to read up on all the news, just make sure you use the search button, we kind of frown upon people who don't

For mapping APs NetStumbler is great, if you want to get more APs switch to Linux and run kismet, but then you are dealing with a whole different setup.

The reason that prism isn't supported is because the SDK is about $25k plus, so he isn't about ready to put out that kind of cash for free software. Which is also killing anyone's hopes of a prism supported software. I would just get Orinoco/Avaya/Lucent/Proxim (etc, etc, whatever it's called now) stuff. Linksys usb support is flakey if you are a lucky one and it works.

i do a lot of wardriving. Look into what software you want to use and get the card it best supports. If you are gonna use netstumbler then get an orinoco card.

don't get those usb wifi adaptors they suck.. its as simple as that. When you wardrive you'll want to get an good directional antena. This will help you so much.

I got a rebranded Orinoco Gold on ebay not too long ago for $59. When you search for orinoco gold make sure you search in titles and descriptions. Sometimes you'll find the rebranded ones like that.

                    Here's the one I got

I looked at the website. Sounds pretty cool. How close do you have to be to the home or office to get online with their network. It would be real shady sitting in front of a home/business on a computer.

                      Thanks

well first of all wardriving is not about accessing networks you find. Its about MAPPING them. Finding a wireless net and what kind it is due to the signiture it sends out is not illegal. However as soon as you get on the network then you are doing something illegal.

WHat it all comes down to is.. do a lot of people who wardrive also get access to random open networks, Yes. That does not mean that wardriving itself is illegal.. its all how you use the data you are getting.

USB wireless cards are the best imho. However, make sure that it's orinoco based as they are the best cards, and you can add an external aerial.

It's better to have a small run of cable from the USB card to the aerial (hell the pigtail is long enough!) and then USB lead to inside the car, than having a PCMCIA card in your laptop and a longer thicker, harder to mange aerial fly lead.

I got the Dell TrueMobile 1150 (rebadged Orinoco Gold) also from ebay for about $60.

Works great with win98SE and win2k using netstumber...haven't tried XP but should be the same as 2k.

The problem with the unsupported cards is that the Netstumbler software has to get the card to change channels etc. So if you want to stumble then get the most compatible card (orinoco gold).

I did the same denial trying to use my prism card and some of the other software...Netstumbler is the best. So punt and get an Orinoco Gold type card and Netstumbler.

(now if you have linux, then that is a different story)
