I didn't do the modifications because I'm using Street Atlas, but the first time to find the position took about 15 minutes. Now everytime it takes about 5 minutes, which is a little bit annoying. I'm also having trouble trying to get my Street Atlas to automatically start the GPS when the program starts. grumble grumble.
Yes you will need to be outside for it to get a fix.
It will take awhile as well.
It should work though, just keep on waiting!
Put it on the roof of your car for the first time, this gives it an excellent view of the sky. (I dont mean drive around like that.. just for testing )
Earthmate / Tripmate suck.....didn't i tell u guys to get Rand Mcnally. In less than 1mins you get a lock on the satelite. I don't realy know why earthmate/tripmate takes tooooo damn long to acquire your location.

I have tested and used a number of GPS systems. The better made systems sync up with the satellite quickest, and are the most resistant from obstructions, like trees. Also they tend to be more expensive.
For example, I won a Garmin GPS II portable receiver. It takes a long time to sync up and does not do well near trees. But it fits in your hand. (and is cheap)
I also have a Garmin GPS 35. This is strictly a receiver antenna combo. It is close to the same size as the GPS II but has no display...must be hooked up to some other device like a laptop.
This machine syncs up in seconds...always has 10 or 12 satellites locked on, and works in the densest forests. It costs more than the GPS II.
As I ramble on...To give an example of size, Garmin also has a receiver only, no antenna, no display...This unit is the size of a deck of cards.
Bottom line is the higher quality units are also larger and more expensive.
I am not speaking against your tripmate etc, but I have not used a better unit than the GPS35.
