  • Low power AGP graphics card. Any suggestions?

    Just installed my car PC - and getting a few niggles. The carputer randomly shuts down and restarts again.

    I've deduced that it's not heat as the CPU isn't getting over 55/60 deg c.

    It doesn't appear to be anything to do with poor road surfaces and shocks. As I've been pretty brutal over some bad roads and it doesn't trigger the shut downs.

    After searching on here it's two possible things - a poor earth or something takes just too much power and tips it over the edge.

    The only pattern that's beginning to form is when I use the visualization in Centrafuse is often shuts down shortly after it's began. Which leads me to think my AGP graphics card pulls too much power on load.

    So Question 1,

    Does an Nvidia 128mb 5600XT sound like a could use too much juice and shut the PC down? I've searched but I can't see a power usage for this card. Anyone have any ball park figures?

    (I'm using the M2 ATX with an AMD Athlon 3000+ single hard drive and a screen that's taking 10w on the 12v rail)

    Question 2,

    If it sounds like the Graphics card - what's a cheap low power AGP alternative - enough to watch a DivX movie in centrafuse.

      Michael,
      We're going to need to know more about your hardware before telling you if it's enough. What all is the M2 running?

      If you've got dedicated graphics, and a bigger processor, you might be maxing out that video card.

      This calculator will help you get a better idea of where you stand power consumption wise. It's a pretty nifty calculator that I just saw today in another thread.

      Have you tried using the integrated graphics (if you have them) to see how they run your movies?

        No I've not got integrated graphics

        I'm running:

        a Shuttle FN45G Motherboard,
        a single 512 DDR chip,
        AMD Athlon 3000+,
        a single 40GB 3.5" hard drive,
        one 80mm case fan.
        The single din motorized screen (10w on 12v)

        USB device -
        2.5" external hard drive powered via USB bus,
        wifi dongle,
        bluetooth dongle,
        OBD scanner

        Currently no other PCI cards or CD/DVD roms

        That antec site is really good! Why haven't I come across it before

        And definitely looks like I'm teetering on the edge for power... Can I underclock the graphics card? Would that help if it is possible?

          What I would do, for testing reasons, is remove all other variables.

          Pull as much off that power supply as possible and try to recreate the issue.

          Your best solution is going to be to upgrade the power supply - that would be the most reliable solution.

          The video card you have now, does it have a fan on it? You might look at buying a lightweight video card that has no fan.

            Athlon 3000+ ? Are you crazy ? You are powering a CPU that typically dissipates 58.4W (and 68.3W in worst case) of heat, drawing 41.4 A (worst case) with a M2-ATX ? A M2-ATX rated to deliver 8A on the 5V rail - that is 40W - (12A for less than a minute- 60 W).

            Tss tss tss... I use an asrok k7s41gx, Geode NX1750(XP1600+ @1.26V 14W) 0.5A 2.5 HDD, a slimCD drive, and I don't fell confortable with the idea of M4ATX ...

            Well, as Jpinkertonsaid. Upgrade your PSU...

              stfu - your calling me a newb, FYI not all socket A mobo's power the CPU over the 5v rail. Those with a P4 connector (like the shuttle mobo's) use the 12v rail. Which the M2 actually kicks out 96 watts (120 for that short term peak)

              So no, not ideal, but I was doing the green thing and reusing all the bits that I have left over from old PC's.

                Cheers - that sounds like a plan - I actually can't remove that much from the system - I'm down to minimum anyway. One stick of ram, the cpu, the graphics card, the windows hard drive.

                I suppose I can remove the portable USB hard drive and a few others. That should take a wee bit off.

                  I'm not into car computers, but I've got a low-power Athlon XP box that I use for web browsing and downloading. I have been looking absolutely forever for a mATX Athlon XP board that undervolts, which looks like what your board does. Can you confirm this? How low does the vcore go, and how is it controlled? Do you manually set the value or is it some kind of percentage under/overclock?

                  Sorry if I'm derailing the thread a bit, but I have been looking forever for this. Thanks for answering!

                    I'd pull all the USB parts you can and see if it makes a difference.

                    Does your graphics card have a fan? If so that's extra power, I know there are kits out there to convert a graphics card to fanless, but it might be more cost effective to buy a new fanless one.

                    Another thing you could try is hooking it all up inside on the bench using a desktop PSU that is a bit more beefy. See if you can replicate the issue then, you won't be testing the PSU so much as just the wattage.

                      Well all this kit ran quite happily under a 250watt Silenx power supply that comes with the shuttle when on the test bench. Haven't changed anything internally except taking out a suspect ram chip and leaving just the one.

                      That 5200 is still taking 34watts - if i invest in an ATI 9600 - they're only about 18watts. A few of those are fanless too. But that 5200 is cheap.

                      Yes there is a fan on the Graphics card - it's plugged into one of the motherboard fan sockets that adjusts speed on temperature.

                        I'd go for the 9600 - do fanless if you can, it'll be that much less power.

                        My son has a fanless PCI-Express card that he uses to play Call of Duty & World of WarCraft - he hasn't had any issues doing that. I use to run a GeForce 5200 that had a busted fan in it, it worked just fine.

                        Aside from upgrading the power supply my next thought would be no/few USB devices and a fanless 9600.

                          Yep, my bad. (You rank on this forum is "newbie", not totally my fault). I agree I didn't pay attention to your mobo's specs so if there's the (in)famous P4 connector the mobo may get Cpu Vcore from the 12V rails ( 7A 12V 84W). You use a 3.5 Hdd, it draws power from the 12V rail too, and you screen needs 10W. In this case,the 12V rail may be the problem.

                          Do you have any info about power consumption of the mother board itself ? For example an Atom mobo from intel uses 22W when the cpu only needs 6W.

                          Oh, one thing, an agp (4/8) slot allows :

                          1 A @ 12 V
                          6 A @ 3.3V + 0.375A (option.)
                          2 A @ 5V
                          Total 41.8 W. So if your video card doesn't need an xternal Power source (molex...) you have to take these into account.
                          Now Galileo is real. Muhahahahaha :p

                            My thinking is I can't be using THAT much over the PSU's abilities as it works fine without shutting down as long as I don't stress the video.

                            http://carpc.kyferez.com/Tools/PSUWattageCalculator.php - this site says the 5600 takes 65watts!! So moving to a fan-less one only using 18 watts has to help the situation.

                            I've never done the maths but would an underclock on the CPU have a big effect on power consumption? Or would it only be minimal?

                            I'm trying to avoid getting rid of a PSU that I've just bought (naively) and to crack this as cheaply as possible there's a credit crunch on you know....

                            And nope - no info on the shuttle power consumption - should be small as it's designed for PSU's as small as 200w

                              While I understand budget poor power can actually lead to even more repairs down the road. Nothing like having to replace a motherboard and processor as well. The power supply touches everything else in the computer case.

                              While that video card is about 45 watts less, you still might have problems.

                              You could always try selling the M2 and taking the money from that and putting it towards an M4. I would sell the M2 on the forums here, and the GPU on CraigsList
