  • Is this motherboard any good?

After having so many problems with my AMD Kino-690S1, I decided to retire it to a desktop PC. The new one I am looking at is the MSI Industrial IM-GM45 Core 2 Duo Mobile Mini-ITX Mainboard http://www.logicsupply.com/products/ms_9818. I am trying to find a board that is similar to the Kino, because I all ready have alot of my setup in place.

One thing I like is that this board boasts 5 serial ports. In my install, I use 4 of them. It has the same number of USB ports, same RAM usage (in fact I can use the RAM from the Kino) and has similar graphic capabilities. It has alot of extras, which I do not care for, but it exceeds what I had before. I can also throw a dual core 2.53 processor in there, which is more powerful then the Kino.

My whole reason for suddenly dropping this AMD board is because it does not seem to work well in a automotive environment. I have to do to many things to get the [email protected] thing to work. Also the other reason is because I am also buying 6 INTEL ATOM boards for the rest of my install and I started to think it was very awkward to have a AMD board, then 6 INTEL boards, I might as well just loose AMD and switch 100% to INTEL.

What do you guys think of the MSI Industrial IM-GM45 Core 2 Duo Mobile Mini-ITX Mainboard?. It should cover my needs? Any problems with boot times, etc?

LogicSupply seems to always be overpriced. That isn't an issue. I have always bought from the company and the excellent customer service makes up for the price difference. Plus they seem to be the only people that have that board, and because my setup is so specific, I have to go with that board. None of the Zotac boards seem to have the stats this MSI board has. If I buy from Ebay, if something goes wrong, its hard to get help and or a replacement.

Just out of curiosity, what type of problems have you encountered with your AMD HiJack? I have been running AMD for over a year without a hitch.
If you cant DODGE em, RAM em.

Its not really the fact that its the AMD, its the fact that the Kino is simply unstable in a car environment. It seems every other time I run the mobo, something breaks or stops working. Right now the CMOS is all messed up, it will not hold the correct time at all. I have it set now to scan the internet to update the time accordingly, but in my car, that would be troublesome since I do not connect to the net right away. Also the thing requires so much cooling. In all I am just not happy with the performance of the PC once it is back in my car. For some reason I just feel INTEL's mobos are much more stable in such hostile environments. Also INTEL gears all of its products to run on very low power consumption.

I received a replacement battery for the KINO and its BIOS has become alot faster. Can it be the battery was messed up in the first place?

I also did alot more research and it turns out that graphics wise, it cannot compare to the graphics card on the KINO. Even though the MSI board has HDMI and what not, as far as 3D graphics, it simply isn't as good. It looks like the KINO is here to stay. I really do not want to sacrifice graphic power for other stuff. I did want that extra processing power, but I will see if the KINO can support a bigger one.
