  • general questions about these systems

I'm not looking to build a media system for my car, but this forum is the closest thing I've found that might be able to help me with some questions.

I'm wanting to build a media center for my home. The original plan was to buy a Via Epia M, make a custom case, and use it as a Tivo/MP3 player/DVD player, all hooked into my wireless network. Since inception the plan has been pretty much the same, but now that I'm getting close to being able to actually afford to start buying stuff, I've run into some potential problems.

Before the questions, I'll rundown the general setup. The media center with video output to my TV thru S-video, audio out to my Sony 5.1 sound system.

    1. The biggest one I'm having is how to control the whole thing. I'd REALLY like to avoid using a wireless keyboard and mouse. A remote would be preferable. A perfect setup would be controlling it thru a cheapo PDA somehow, but I have no idea how to do it, and while I've read that it can be done pretty easily, I have yet to find any specific info.

    2. I'd originally planned on using an Epia M mobo from Via with a slimline DVD/CD-RW combo drive. However, I'm now thinking of getting a DVD burner to burn recorded shows on. But I'm wondering if the Epia's have enough CPU horsepower to power a DVD burner efficiently, while still doing "normal" stuff.

    3. I'm also concerned about the playback quality of DVD and Divx movies , as well as recorded shows onto the TV.

    4. I haven't decided if I want to run Linux or Windows on it.

    5. I really want to be able to access it from work, preferably via SSH.

The preliminary specs for my system, which is VERY fluid at this point, are below. I know what I want, just not sure about the best way to do it. The two most important things are (a) doesn't draw a lot of power when idling, and (b) system noise (I want as little as possible)

    Seagate Barracude 120 GB drive
Hauggauge WinTV PVR 250 w/ remote
    Via Epia M 9000
    Linksys wireless USB
    512 megs DDR RAM

Any and all help is very much appreciated.
