  • What should I do hardware wise about camera recording?

I am installing a camera for each side of my car, which will replace all the mirrors in my car. I pretty much have everything all setup, wiring wise, but I need advice on the recording aspect of it.

Basically what I wanted to do is have the car start instantly recording the cameras once the car is turned on. I originally wanted to go with a portable DVR, but in order to get speed and GPS overlay,. I would have to buy more equipment on top of the DVR. I then saw that Curiosity made a program for Windows that allow you to have overlay, record video and audio. This is great but it means that the PC has to be instant on. Windows 7 now makes that possible, but I am worried that my system is way to big to stay in instant on sleep state. I know after a few hours, it will go into hibernation mode to save battery.

Another idea is to use one of my rear systems to turn on right away and start recording. My only issue with that is I would have to buy a GPS for that (not a big deal), also get it to be instant on (maybe use Win 7. Currently use Win XP in EWF mode on all rear systems). This could work since all the system is, is a HDD with a MoBo. Add one GPS and you have a very low power using system. My main concern is the processing power. The rear systems are only 1.6 single core Atoms. They have 2GB of RAM. I do not know if it will be able to handle a USB tuner card and the CPU usage required to record video and audio, but still allow me to use it as a personal computer when need be. Also powering the unit may be a challenge. Currently now all the rear system are controlled by the main systems so I would have to figure out how to keep one on.

Another option could be to buy a 7th system that uses low power. Maybe a Sheeva Plug? I would need help getting it to do what I want though. Also with the money I would have to spend on this system, it may be cheaper to just buy the equipment I am trying to avoid.

What do you guys think I should do?

Is it possible to forgo the instant on requirement? That's what is going to cost you money.

The instant on aspect is very important to me. I want recording before I even pull out of my drive way. I was number crunching and to do this, it would cost me about $300.00 to $350.00 for a 7th system. So the cost is more then buying a black box based system. i found the Rearviewsafety RV-300. What I like about it, it that it has a front facing camera, but also has a small jack to add a second camera. The gears in my head started working and I was thinking that maybe I can connect the DQP to that secondary jack. That would give me a total of 5 camera views. The main being front, the secondary being left, right, rear and inside cabin. Problem is I do not know if the secondary camera for this thing has some kind of unique plug, etc. Also I am not sure if a drop in frame rate will look bad. From what I understand, the unit records at 30fps, but if you add the second camera, recording drops down to 15fps. I am not sure how that will look.

What I do like about the RV-300 is that it records the cameras, records sound (people say the sound capture is to good), MPH, has GPS logging with Google Maps, and other features. So if for some reason I have to take the footage to court, I have more then enough data to prove I am inoccent.

      Here is a picture.

Here is a video. From what I read it uses similar software as the Roadhawk, which is displayed here.

The real question is how you think you're getting out of your driveway in under 20 seconds in a big truck weighed down with 900 computers. :v

Sheeva plug will never be able to handle the video recording...

LOL..... Its being pushed by a big V8, usually in 5 seconds I'm halfway down the street, lol. Plus I did my setup very tastefully. I took weight into effect. Thats why the Main PC is seated in the middle of the car, and the rear systems are at the back rear driver side.

I kind of figured that.... plus the fact I would have to have someone help me to do it.

Better hope the ticketing officer doesn't recognize or question you about it whilst writing the ticket, otherwise... they'll subpoena that stuff as evidence haha, so better make sure to delete everything before the court date!

I want to delete my rear view mirror so I can use that area of the windshield. I want to make my original overhead area longer so it intergrates everything into one area and looks like one piece. Only thing they will see is the screen and the image, and if anything I will turn off the screen when they get close to my car. They will not even see the recorder.
